Danielle Aquilina brings ‘Am I Gay Enough?’ to Darwin Fringe with a hilarious, heartfelt and deeply personal performance that blends comedy, original music and slam poetry into a show that’s as thoughtful as it is entertaining.
The answer to the show’s title? Yes – Danielle is definitely gay enough.
Taking to the stage in an outfit that playfully leaned into queer stereotypes – complete with overalls, a rainbow shirt and the obligatory carabiner – Danielle immediately had the audience laughing. “I’m not sure whether it was the question that drew you or the fact that I put the words on my tits,” she joked, setting the tone for the 40-minute performance.
Rather than following a traditional stand-up format, Danielle delivers much of the show through slam poetry, explaining the etiquette early on: “If you like something you snap a lot, if you don’t like something, you get out.” The result is a fast-paced mix of storytelling, spoken word and comedy that feels refreshingly different.
Original songs performed on the ukulele add another layer to the show, with the audience quickly joining in on catchy choruses – including the unforgettable (and unapologetically outrageous) ‘Don’t Stick Your Dick in My Arsehole.’
Drawing from personal experience, Danielle candidly explores everything from first queer relationships and navigating bisexual identity to accidentally ending up in bed with a man wearing a wedding ring, receiving an unsolicited explicit photo while having lunch with her parents, and delivering an unexpectedly heartfelt ode to body hair.
