Wednesday night in Darwin marked the debut of delightfully Scarlet: A Vintage Affair at Darwin Fringe, and the talented duo of Sophie deLightful and Scarlet Tinkabelle delivered an entertaining hour of burlesque, live vocals and comedy that kept the audience engaged from start to finish.
While the pair have performed in the Northern Territory many times through Top End Pride with Sideshow Femmes and previously brought a Carnival Cabaret to Palmerston, this is their first Darwin Fringe show together and it certainly made a memorable first impression.
One of the show's biggest strengths is its audience interaction. Whether it was playful banter, inviting crowd participation or the unforgettable moment when an audience member was invited on stage to give Sophie a cheeky spank, the performers created a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere where everyone felt part of the experience.
Scarlet Tinkabelle was a standout, dazzling the crowd with an impressive seven costume changes, each bringing a fresh burst of glamour and personality to the stage. Sophie's powerhouse vocals balanced the comedy and burlesque perfectly, giving the production plenty of variety.
One of the night's most memorable moments came when Tink incorporated a bed of nails into the performance, adding an element of classic sideshow spectacle to the production. It was a striking contrast to the glamorous costumes and playful humour seen throughout the evening, showcasing another side of Tink's talents.
Adding to the fun, audience members were encouraged to dress up for the evening, with a Best Dress prize awarded during the show, which was another touch that helped make the night feel like a true vintage cabaret celebration.
For those new to burlesque or cabaret, deLightfully Scartlet: A Vintage Affair is an accessible and thoroughly enjoyable introduction. It's funny, charismatic and never takes itself too seriously, making for a lively night out that leaves audiences smiling long after the curtain falls.
