Sam Fischer’s Top Tips for Songwriting Sessions

Australian pop powerhouse Sam Fischer has racked up more than two billion global streams, collaborated with the likes of Demi Lovato and Meghan Trainor, and taken his songwriter around the world.

Ahead of his BIGSOUND 2026 showcases, Sam shares his top tips for songwriting sessions from ditching expectations and bringing ideas to the room, to getting out of your own way and remember it’s not that deep.

EXPECTATIONS

Keep them to a minimum. You’re only setting yourself up for failure if you go into a session expecting to write the greatest song of all time. You might end up doing that, but it’s only adding unnecessary pressure to expect to!

BE A GOOD HANG

A good writing session always starts with an hour or two of just hanging out and talking about anything and everything. There’s nothing that kills a vibe more than a closed-off energy in a writing session.

TITLES / CONCEPTS / MELODIES

It’s always good to be prepared even if none of the ideas you come in with end up being what you work on. There are no bad ideas in a brainstorm so throw everything out there because you never know what’s going to inspire.

GET OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY

Not every song you write is going to be a smash, but you’re not going to get anywhere by overthinking every single lyric and melody.

IT’S NOT THAT DEEP

You have to remember that what we get to do every day is pretty damn cool and at the end of the day, we’re making music. Have fun, it’s not that deep!
