Meet Ryan and Guy from Brissy electro pop duo Bayview Terrace. The pair have been gradually gaining attention with each release, and show. We had a chat to the Bayview Terrace boys about their developing project, new single ‘These Days’, plus more.

Futuremag Music: Hey Bayview Terrace, how's QLD treating you?

Bayview Terrace: Well as always! We're finding lots of inspiration from our home state. There are so many amazing and talented artists emerging from QLD at the moment that there's always something exciting going on. Easily got through that first heatwave of summer too, so things are looking great for festival season.

Futuremag Music: Can you talk us through your relationship with music over the years? How did you guys launch the Bayview Terrace project?

Bayview Terrace: Our individual paths have been so different over the years. In days gone, Ryan was super into EDM and DJ'ing, whilst I was playing in indie bands and doing acoustic stuff. One thing that links us together is our appreciation for a great song, irrespective of genre. I think that's what attracts us to making music in general. The ability for a song completely out of your usual vibe to come and sucker punch you with an amazing melody, or vocal hook or just a feeling; there are endless possibilities and that's so exciting to us. 

We were living together at the time but doing our own separate music things. One morning last year shortly after MMVAF, we were pumping Northeast Party House's album 'Dare' and Ryan turned to me and said, "you know if I was to ever make something a bit more dancey it'd probably sound something like this". I told him to give it a red hot crack, and about 4 hours later we had the very first BVT tracks that will never see the light of day!

Futuremag Music: Your recent single 'These Days' is a powerful pop piece. Can you talk us through the writing and production process?

Bayview Terrace: I first came to Ryan with a chorus, a first verse, and the piano layer. In that stripped-back form it was really easy to focus on the emotion of the lyrics. We wanted to create an ebb and flow relationship between the verses and chorus instrumentally. We aimed to have the verse sit in this pool of vibes instrumentally, then have the chorus punch with the same underlying frustration that exists within the lyrics. We feed off each other's energy when writing and producing together so once we had that structural idea in mind, it all came together pretty quickly. No idea is too far out in our sessions, so we're kind of like kids in a candy store for a while. After we've got the main ideas down we put our adult caps back on and reel them back to create a cohesive piece. It was then up to Ryan to sit down and labour over the countless 1%'ers that turn a good track into a great track. 

Futuremag Music: Where does Bayview Terrace sit within the scene? Where do you see yourselves going in the future?

Bayview Terrace: Imagine a Dragonball Z fusion dance between Bonobo and Hayden James. Combining the best parts of longer form dance sets with a more direct pop-songwriting approach is exactly what we want for our sound. We love the energy and flow of live sets where an audience can just jam out, but we also want to give people vocal hooks that they can scream back at us. We're a fresh act, so we've got a lot of troubleshooting to do. In the immediate future we want to develop a sound that really represents us as people and what we want to achieve sonically, build off of some solid future releases, continue to enjoy what we're doing...and hopefully get the opportunity to share our vision with a growing number of people.

Futuremag Music: A funny one to wrap it up. If 'Bayview Terrace' was a cocktail, what would be in it to best describe yourself and your music?

Bayview Terrace: "The BVT”. Equal parts vodka and pink gin, a dash of blue curaçao, topped with either soda water or lemonade (drinker’s choice) and a twist of lemon for garnish. Colourful, potent, and refreshing. Best enjoyed before a festival.
