Benson Interview - Filthy Bangers At Big Pineapple
We caught up with Australia’s loveable larrikin, Benson ahead of his performance at Big Pineapple on the Sunshine Coast on May 25. We covered everything from new music, touring, dinosaurs and Benson’s forthcoming performance at Big Pineapple.
Futuremag Music: Hey Benson, how’re you going?
Benson: I’ve had the past three months off playing to focus on writing some new music. It’s been good because I’ve been able to take a break and write music at the same time. I have some new singles that’ll pop just before Big Pineapple.
Futuremag Music: Could you talk us through how you construct your sound in both your released and unreleased singles?
Benson: In the past 18 months, all the singles I’ve released have been on the pop side of things. The new stuff I have planned is more towards my club roots, which I really enjoy doing. I have three or four records completed which I’ll be releasing throughout the year.
Futuremag Music: Are you headed on tour with your new tracks? Where does Big Pineapple sit within this?
Benson: I’ll be announcing a tour soon, and Big Pineapple will be smack bang in the middle. I played Big Pineapple a couple of years ago and stoked about coming back! The grounds and location are amazing, it’s almost like Jurrasic Park and some huge fucking T-Rex could come out of the forest during your set and rip you to shreds. It makes you feel alive.
Futuremag Music: I’m just thinking about a T-Rex stomping around the Sunshine Coast. Hahaha
Benson: Oh, it would be shitfaced with a couple of double blacks, but its tiny little arms aren’t long enough to reach its mouth so they’re spilling the drinks all over the bar and struggling to pay pass.
Futuremag Music: Talking about pineapples, a bit of a controversial one... Does Pineapple belong on pizza?
Benson: I reckon it does. I could lose a few fans because of this but I say pineapple does belong on top of pizza. One of the first pizzas I ate had pineapple on it. A lot of people say it doesn’t belong, but they’re wrong. Hawaiian and Supreme pizza are perfect for pineapple. I can’t think of one other thing pineapple would be decent with.
Futuremag Music: To wrap it up, if ‘Benson’ was a cocktail, what would be in it to best describe yourself and your music?
Benson: It would be a concoction, maybe a can of Woodstock, two cans of pineapple pieces, heaps of salt, hot sauce, a bit of dinosaur sausage, and I’m not sure what other gross shit I can throw in there. It would be a bit shit to be honest, but it would be called filthy bangers or the dirty boy.
