Creative Conversations 011: DOOLIE Breaks Down Her Debut Body Of Work

Interview by Luke Byatt

We caught up with Gold Coast pop singer-songwriter, DOOLIE to chat through her debut body of work, hope u like my mixtape. DOOLIE’s mixtape comes after a six-pack of artist-defining singles, and is a clear evolution for the ascending act.

Futuremag Music: Hey DOOLIE, how's Iso life treating you?

DOOLIE: Not too bad actually, I’m doing lots of writing and cooking!

Futuremag Music: Congratulations on the release of your debut body of work, hope u like my mixtape! It's bop after bop from your existing catalogue and a selection of new releases. Could you talk us through the track selection and ordering for the mixtape?

DOOLIE: Thank you so much!!! I’ve been performing some of these for a while so it makes me soooooo happy they’re all out in the world officially! Although I want the ordering to be cohesive I wanted it to be “mixed” which i know seems quite literal for a mixtape haha. Some of the tracks have already been released I wanted to find a way to still make those tracks exciting without giving the listener an idea of what was coming next; so there would be a surprise as you listened through all of the tracks. As for selection, the mixtape is made up of songs which I feel best tell my song writing story over the past couple of years, and really showcase my growth and experimentation in that time up until now.

Futuremag Music: Digging deeper into the countless collaborations on the record, how did you loop up with everyone? What is your process of working with other acts, compared to working by yourself?

DOOLIE: For me there’s a huge difference when I get to bounce off of others when writing a song, rather than just me by myself. The fabulous team at etcetc helped to link me up with all these producers I had admired for a while. My favourite thing to do when working with someone is starting from scratch, so no one is taking control and we’re both writing alongside each other. I find I get to be the most free creatively with that method. There’s also something thats weirdly magic about writing in the studio – I definitely am in my zone there! It’s been incredible writing with such talents and also just to meet a whole heap of new people in the industry.

Futuremag Music: I know it's like asking who's your favourite child, but are there any tracks that are notable standouts for you and why? Is there anything you'd like to highlight that fans and listeners should look out for?

DOOLIE: Oooh, well I love all my tracks equally like a good song-mum but if I had to say… there’s 2 that do really get me excited for everyone to hear and that’s the lead single ‘It’s You Not Me’ which Kilter produced and ‘Conflicted’ produced by ALIUS. These 2 always get me excited and ready to dance every time I listen to them, they’re unique in their own way, and they’re always stuck in my head.

Futuremag Music: To wrap it up, if hope u like my mixtape was a cocktail what would be in it to best describe its sonic?

DOOLIE: I think it would be an Amaretto Sour. Its sweet, but strong - pretty with a twist. It’s bound to get you drunk but the good drunk where you don’t cry at the end of the night.
