Creative Conversations 029: Our Favourite Boy Band Un-Ti

Words by Sarah McManus (Sarah Wolfe)

Our favourite (soon to be your favourite) boy band, Un-Ti dropped their sophomore their single ‘Stay’. We caught up with Ben from the trio who gave us some insight to the band’s creation, the creation of ‘Stay’ and much more.

Futuremag Music: Hey Un-Ti, how're you all doing?

Un-Ti: Doing well, thanks for asking!

Futuremag Music: How did you all meet?

Un-Ti: We all met in high school music class. Having similar music tastes we would naturally jam together and help each other out with our pieces. Lachie and I (Ben) went on DJ’ing a lot of house parties for kids in our school, while Lachie and Reid would also be doing acoustic gigs. Though it was not until after high school we decided to get together and form Un-Ti.

Futuremag Music: What does a day in the life of Un-Ti look like?

Un-Ti: Day to day, it’s quite different for all of us. We try to get together as much as possible to record and write. When we do, we’ll usually record vocals in the afternoon, and once that’s done, have a jam to come up with some potential new ideas. If it’s a successful session, then we’ll have some beers to celebrate!

Futuremag Music: Could you please walk us through your songwriting process?

Un-Ti: As with most artists it can vary song to song, but generally I (Ben) like to start with some chords on the guitar or piano and just hum along melodies until something sticks – I will usually get some lyrical ideas with the melody as well. Once I have an idea of the direction I want to take it, then I begin production. After production, the rest of the lyrics are written and then we begin recording vocals.

Futuremag Music: 'Stay’ is a stunning song, could you tell us about the inspiration behind it?

Un-Ti: Production wise, we wanted to make something with a four on the floor beat that would really drive the track and while doing that try to score a good balance between something pop and dance-like. We’re a sucker for chords and melodies that draw you in right away and have a strong emotional force behind them, so it also had to have that. Lyrically, it tries to explore what it’s like being in a relationship with someone who is very different to yourself.

Futuremag Music: What are your three favourite tracks by Aussie musicians at the moment?

Un-Ti: Hauskey – Somewhere; Kota Banks – Yes; Taka Perry, Gia Vorne – Only U
