With the official release of the record set to be on Friday 16 October, we have the pleasure to give you a deep dive and listen! We caught up with Fabich and Will Simms to give insight to their collaborative nature, production process and much more!
Futuremag Music: Hey Fabich and Will Simms, how're you two doing?
Fabich: Good, thank you, I'm spending the corona crisis in Berlin, it's getting a bit tougher again lately but I'm hanging in there, working on new music, cooking and doing fitness! Hope you are fine, too.
Will Simms: Hey, I am doing really good thank you. This lockdown and crisis, although scary at first, as been really good for me. I live in London and I am extremely lucky to have had a little garden and terrace during the summer months. Also my family and friends are safe and healthy so I am super grateful. I have been making loads music at home, getting into fitness too and just re-evaluating my life. Also found love during lockdown believe it or not! Mad!
Futuremag Music: Congratulations on the release of 'No Way'. Before we jump into that could you give us some insight to your relationships with music over the years?
Fabich: Music has always been a big part of my life, some of my first memories are going to concerts with my Mum, from Michael Jackson to Bon Jovi and G-Unit - I love everything! A bit later, when I was a teenager, I started DJ’ing at my local school parties and from there on went on to develop my interest in making my own beats and music production...
Will: I heard Michael Jackson when I was 3 years old and that was it. My fate was sealed. I studied him and his music and only listen to him until about 11/12. I would listen and dissect everything I was hearing and learned about Quincy and Rod Temperton and all the musicians that played on the songs and I wanted to be like all of them all at once. Then I discovered Hardcore (Gabba) and Happy Hardcore and I became obsessed with that! That's when I started making music in my bedroom trying to re-play happy hardcore piano riffs etc… At 19, I moved to London and was a runner at magic studios in Tottenham for the Dream Teem, and started making UK garage and then moved on to dance and pop and hiphop and literally anything. I just love making music
Futuremag Music: How did you both meet? How did you combine your diverse experiences to deliver a summer ready experience in 'No Way'?
Fabich: Will and I actually met for the first time in LA! It was a very hot day and we had a lot of iced coffees and a great session with WATCHTHEDUCK, one of Pharrell's artists, in West Hollywood. For both of us making music is about having fun and I think you can also hear that in "No way!"
Will: Exactly as Fabich said, a hot day in West Hollywood with loads of Ice coffee. We talked about life and played each other music that we liked and that’s how we bonded and started jamming. We did a few things that day and one particular idea felt really good and as luck would have it, Jesse Ranking from WATCHTHEDUCK was in town so we gave him a call, he came over and we made a super dope song. It was funny that we met in LA since both Fabich and I lived in London. So we knew we had to meet up and carry on working together there when we both got back.
Futuremag Music: Delving more into 'No Way', could you talk us through the production and writing process?
Fabich: After connecting in LA we became friends and also started working in Will's studio in London. Normally before a session we have a coffee together or grab a snack and talk about what we have been up to.We both have a big love for house, disco and catchy melodies and if I remember correctly for this song we started with the drums. Will then laid down the bass and I added the chords while he was already jamming on the vocals together with the singer! We had a blast in the studio and the song came together really quickly.
Will: It was a super fun day with no expectations. As Fabich says, we both love House, disco and anything that makes you feel good and want to move, so when Fabich started playing those drums I was already dancing in the studio. I picked up the bass, which I rarely ever do, but it just happened naturally and played that bass line. I turned round to Call Me Loop who is the singer on the record and we instantly started coming up with melodies and a concept and Fabich was putting down the chords! It was literally a jam from start to finish and it all came together super quick. Also for some reason that day, the gypspy kings’ Bamboleo was in my head and I suggested for a laugh that we use the melody and twist it lyrically to what we were saying in the song. I said it as a joke but it actually worked so we decided to go with it.
Futuremag Music: What does the future hold for each of you?
Fabich: I want to keep on releasing a lot of music, right now I'm working on my biggest project to date which I'm very excited about - I don't want to reveal anything more just yet but this project has been in the making for the last few years so I'm stoked to finally get it out there. Otherwise with this whole crisis I hope that everyone stays healthy and safe and that we can soon enjoy a good boogie all together.
Will: The future is full of music, hopefully covid free, with elected officials who actually have the interest of humanity and the planet at heart. Also working on my Love Harder project. So load of new songs coming out over the next few months. Some K-Pop too. So yeah loads of music.
