Creative Conversations 038: Cookii Is Your Hyperpop Icon
Words by Justin Pix and Luke Byatt
Bouncing off her recent release ‘little’, Melbourne artist Cookii has returned to give us another hyperpop hit ‘not that inna you’.
Cookii has demonstrated again and again her ability to produce catchy Hyperpop singles, thronged with bedroom pop vocals, dreamy guitars and gleaming atmospheric hits, and her new single ‘not that inna you is no stranger to this. The track starts off by accentuating cookii’s dazzling vocal performance, expertly placed over gentle synth chords along with percussion leading to the chorus. When we approach the chorus, we find ourselves in a harmony of buzzing drums and luminescent guitars alongside a catchy hook, as to what Cookii describes as her own version of Kelly Clarksen’s ‘Since U Been Gone;. Throughout the single, Cookii delivers a refreshing take on pop by maintaining a constant high ardor complimented by smooth detailed production.
We just absolutely adore this track and you can discover more from our interview below.
Futuremag Music: Hey Cookii, how're you doing?
Cookii: Hey Futuremag Music, I’m feelin’ fine! just plodding along, making some tunes.
Futuremag Music: You're a very mysterious individual so not sure how much you'll disclose, but could you give us some insight to your relationship with music and how the Cookii project came together?
Cookii: For sure! i’ve been obsessed with music my whole life – I played a few instruments classically throughout school before moving onto writing songs. I started out writing songs acoustically but it turned into being more interested in production pretty naturally. writing for Cookii began in early 2018, I’d been writing before then but never anything like Cookii. It just immediately clicked for me and I haven’t looked back since! It’s turned into something really special to me over the last couple of years.
Futuremag Music: Congratulations on the release of 'not that inna you', it's a phenomenal follow up from your previous releases! Could you talk us through the production and writing process for the single? How does it compare to your previous tracks?
Cookii: Thank you so much, it’s very nice to have it out in the world! 'not that inna you' came about because I was chatting to a person who was going through a breakup at the time and they were explaining what had happened between them and their ex-partner. It just gave me super Paramore vibes straight away, the lyrics came to me really quickly.
Honestly, I just really wanted to make a teen angst breakup rock song but somehow keep it Cookii. I tried to do this by keeping the verses pretty PC sounding to tie in with the previous tracks stylistically and that gave me the freedom to have a more rock chorus. In a way it’s kind of similar to the way ‘little’ was written also. I’m just out here trying to write pop bangers but not be boring about it I guess.
Futuremag Music: To wrap it up, if Cookii was a cocktail, what would be in it to best describe yourself and your music?
Cookii: I think a Cookii cocktail would be fruity but with a bit of tang to it. generic vibe with a hot twist.
