CREATIVE CONVERSATIONS 096: LOOSE BRICKS ON LIVING IN THE RIGHT NOW, TOURING, AND HITTING LOOSE BRICKS (LITERALLY)

Interview by Brooklyn Gibbs

Yuranga/Mildura-formed, Naarm/Melbourne-based indie-rock band Loose Bricks have just revealed their shimmering new single Right Now.

Futuremag Music and Loose Bricks caught up for a chat to discuss all things touring, hardships that come with being in a band, and hitting loose bricks (literally).

FMM: Congrats on the release of Right Now. How does it feel to have this track out there and what has the reaction to it been like so far?

Loose Bricks: Right Now has been in the works for a while, and finally having it out into the world is an incredible feeling. We have been blown away by the response to the song. The video clip has received over 38k views across all platforms in the first five days which has blown our minds. Our friends, families and fans have been in touch and the feedback has been really positive. We’re truly humbled by the response and so grateful for all the support. Big love to you all.

FMM: How did you celebrate its release?

Loose Bricks: We all celebrated the release separately but made some time for a FaceTime to share a Better Beer and congratulate ourselves and reflect on what it’s taken for us to get here. We all listened to the track with friends and family as well which was a really special moment.

FMM: Why is right now the right time for this release? (pun intended ha!)

Loose Bricks: Heading into the summer season, it was the right time for this release as Right Now gives that feeling of having a beer with your mates on a Sunday out in the sun. It gets you looking forward to the warmer weather about to come and will be the track you crank with your mates around the table.

FMM: Right Now captures how far you guys have come on your journey. What are some of the hardships and strengths you’ve faced on your journey?

Loose Bricks: We all come from a country town in regional Victoria that is about 600kms from Melbourne and 400kms from Adelaide. We lived there for the first 5 years of Loose Bricks, resulting in a lot of miles on the road to get our name out there. Plenty of hours in the car for a lot of short sets early in the night. Our community has been heavily affected by mental health battles and we have lost a lot of close friends far too soon. Having experienced so much heartache, we have all made conscious decisions to prioritise our own mental well-being as well as to be a constant support to our friends. Check-in on your loved ones.

FMM: Anything you’d love to do all over again, or anything you’d like to change?

Loose Bricks: We all agree that Aaron would like to change the camera angle on his double chin in the video clip! However, we’re so pleased with the final product. Oscar Dawson did a great job producing the song and Declan Harding was so good to work with as he directed, filmed, and edited the video clip. There will always be small adjustments we would like to make to our own playing because we’re all perfectionists in our craft, but we are stoked with the result.

FMM: What have you learned about yourselves as a band through writing and releasing this single?

Loose Bricks: A big realisation is how different all our music tastes are. We love the writing process that we have adopted recently, becoming more collaborative in the early stages of a song, rather than adding parts to a song that Levi has written. Through this, we have realised how unique all our tastes are. This has certainly been a great evolution for us!

FMM: So, what does being in the ‘right now’ mean to you?

Loose Bricks: The last couple of years in isolation have really brought to light the importance of friends, family, experiences, and memories. You have one life to live, so live it the way that you want to. We couldn’t tell you how many times we wished to be doing things we love during lockdowns, yet looking back, how much time have we spent distracted on our phones or in our heads when we have been with friends and family. We have taken it for granted and this song highlights the importance of being present and enjoying your life, maybe even letting the hair down a bit.

FMM: You’re set to hit the road late November for a tour. What are you most looking forward to?

Loose Bricks: We’ve only played two headline tours in the last three years, so we’re so excited to be on the road playing to our fans! We have been working really hard on our set to make it something special as well so we can wait for people to see it.

FMM: What can fans expect from the tour?

Loose Bricks: We’ll be putting together a setlist that gives everyone at the show a special experience. For our fans from earlier days coming to watch their third or fourth shows, they’ll have new songs to hear and dance along to, and newer followers will get to experience our older tracks that so many people love and cherish.

FMM: I love the band name! Do you mind sharing how it came about?

Loose Bricks: The band name came about during a funny experience with Levi and an old Loose Bricks member, Isaiah. While thinking of band names they reversed a car into a pile of bricks that Levi’s dad was jackhammering out at the time – “oh shit, we hit the loose bricks” – and it had a nice ring to it!

FMM: Which band member would you label as the loosest brick among you and why?

Loose Bricks: Korbin would have to be the loosest brick as he’s always got a beer in hand, a slight shade of red in the eyes, and is always up for doing something questionable for a bit of a laugh.

FMM: For anyone coming across your music for the first time, how would you describe both your band and your music?

Loose Bricks: As a band we’re quite down to earth and coming from a small town where we know everyone, we feel like everyone we meet we click with instantly. That’s why we want people to connect with our music instantly. Our lyrics have a unique depth and emotion, and we love that our listeners can feel an individual connection to our music. Loose Bricks songs are centred around life experiences that most people can relate to, but we’re also very diverse and there’s definitely a song for everyone in our catalogue, which is the best part!

FMM: What mark do you hope to leave on the Australian music scene?

Loose Bricks: We hope we can be known as best mates that made the most out of the opportunities that we have. Our mantra as a band is to just have as much fun as possible and enjoy the ride. We realise how lucky we are to be doing this, and we want to make the most of every second!

We also hope to make deep connections with people through our raw, honest lyrics. We love how music can speak to so many different people all over the world.

FMM: What’s next for the band?

More music! Our goal for next year is to release lots of music. We’ve worked our butts off this year touring around Australia with lots of great bands and next year we are going to work our butts off in the studio and get some great music into as many ears as possible! (While touring of course)
