INTO THE MOSH 100: ELECTRIC SIX LIVE AT THE CROXTON | REVIEW

Words by Sofia Perica.

Electric Six performed at The Croxton a couple of Fridays ago and it was a show not to be missed. Known for their energetic and eclectic style, Electric Six blends elements of rock, punk and new wave. They first gained major attention in the early 2000s with their hit single Danger! High Voltage from their debut album, Fire. The band is known for their engaging and theatrical live performance, so I was excited to see them in the flesh.

In preparation for the show, I watched the music video for Gay Bar, and I was laughing the whole time. I thought this is exactly the kind of music my dad listens to – a classic rock band that doesn’t take themselves too seriously - they remind me of an American version of The Cosmic Psychos.

I walk in and I see everyone’s hipster dad and their punk sons – a sea of fedoras, beards, and old band t-shirts. I should’ve got my dad a ticket. Electric Six walked on stage with their neat suits and Ray-Ban sunglasses looking as slick as ever. This early 2000s band are nothing short of effortlessly cool; they’ve still got it after all these years. Their ability to incorporate humour with their vintage, rockstar edge is what makes this band different from other artists.

What stood out the most to me though is the way they interacted with the audience – it meant that there was this vivacious atmosphere that lasted through the whole show. A definite highlight was their performance of their hit song Danger- High Voltage; it got me headbanging and stamping my feet – dancing like an old fart who still got it. My favourite moment, though, was their performance of Gay Bar, where I noticed a father and son creating their own mosh and got all the other oldies to join in. I nearly cried tears of laughter and joy – this is what Electric Six is about – bringing the generations together to have a bloody good time and rock out to some tunes.

If you're going to see them live, be ready to dance and get into the spirit of the show.
