Eves Karydas - Honest and Explorative

Interview by Sean Tayler

We had a chat to Brisbane via London based artist, Eves Karydas ahead of her forthcoming east coast tour.

Futuremag Music: Hey Eves, how's life? Jumping straight into it, can you talk us through the process of how you entered the music scene, and your relationship with music over the years? Which artists have inspired your music, and life in general?

Eves Karydas: Life’s not bad thank you! I’ve been writing music since I was 11 and went through my teen years playing in cafes and taking every opportunity I could to perform. By putting myself out there and meeting like-minded people, I eventually found that my music was given a much bigger platform.

I’m a huge believer in properly living through your phases and honouring honesty in your craft. Be inspired by what you want to be inspired by! Even if it’s something weird and unassuming (like a facebook status posted by your childhood friend. I wrote a song on my album this way). And so many areas of music inspire me, from Joni Mitchell to Bruce Springsteen to off-kilter Colombian music that only exists on dusty old vinyl. I just like soaking everything in and experimenting!

Futuremag Music: Continuing with that, how do you feel the change from 'Eves the Behaviour' to 'Eves Karydas' altered your career? Can you talk us through the thought process of why you made the switch, and what it means for your style?

Eves Karydas: It was a very easy shift for me because I was living in London and that naturally made me grow as a human being. The music I was writing felt different, so I thought it deserved a different title. Eves The Behaviour was very much a concept whereas Eves Karydas is very much me just being honest and feeling young and explorative.

Futuremag Music: You recently smash out a sensational set at this year's Splendour In The Grass. What was that experience like? What were some highlights from your set on the Mix Up stage?

Eves Karydas: Thank you! It was an incredibly fun set. I’ve only just begun performing with a wireless microphone, so I was bouncing around like a mad thing trying not to lose my breath. The highlight for me was seeing an inflatable couch in the crowd. Shout out to those boys who smuggled it in.

Futuremag Music: You're also headed on tour for 'Couch', what can fans expect from your headline shows?

Eves Karydas: These shows are going to showcase a full spectrum! I’m playing old ETB songs, new EK songs from my upcoming album, and even bringing my acoustic guitar. Like I said earlier, I grew up playing guitar, so I’m stoked to finally weave that into my set again.

Futuremag Music: Do you have any pre/post-show rituals before you perform?

Eves Karydas: My pre-show ritual is listening to Cardi B (Bartier Cardi) and my post-show ritual is to eat Cherry Ripe with my band.

Futuremag Music: A bit of a weird one to wrap it up, if 'Eves Karydas' was a cocktail, what would be in it to best describe yourself and your music?

Eves Karydas: An Old Fashioned, because I think the zesty orange and deep smoky bourbon combo sums me up rather well. Add in those bitters and you’ve got an Eves Karydas song.
