Extended Play 013: YesYou - This Is Passion Pt.1 (Premiere)

By Luke Byatt

Brisbane based group, YesYou have returned with This is Passion Pt.1, a marvellous mixtape encompassing the fun and beauty of music production.

It’s been a little over two years since YesYou released their cover of The Korgis track ‘Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime’ (a favourite of mine). The release of This Is Passion Pt. 1 is a continuation of the group’s prosperous sonic expression. Through an inward exploration, YesYou tap into their roots allowing for creative freedoms to blossom without music industry pressure or expectations. The mixtape is joyful affair that blends bubbly Electronica with R&B, Hip Hop, plus a multitude of other styles. Pulling samples from the likes of The Poets of Rhythm and Eric Gale, This Is Passion Pt. 1 is designed to teleport a listener back in time to the late 90’s and early 00’s. If you love Fat Boy Slim and Moby, YesYou’s This Is Passion Pt. 1 is certain to be your soundtrack to life.

In addition to the Mixtape, YesYou have teamed up Sydney-based designer Kris Andrew Small (Nike, Sony Music, It’s Nice That, Adidas, Dazed, The Presets), for an energetic visual 18-page zine and t-shirt. In addition to this, YesYou have combined arms with Brisbane based beats collective Spare Time to run a remix competition for the release.

There’s a reason that YesYou are one of my favourite acts of all time, and This Is Passion Pt.1 is a proof to that sentiment.

ZINE + TEE | REMIX COMPETITION

At the beginning of 2016 we started to realise we’d lost sight of why we started the project and it stopped being fun. We’d been in the studio five days a week for the last three years and getting bogged down in making music we thought people wanted to hear. We’d lost ourselves in overthinking each second of every song... All the records on This is Passion Pt.1 we made when we were playing around, using samples we’d stumbled on to clear our heads of the music we were writing.
