Extended Play 024: cookii - blossom

Words by Justin Pix

2020 has seen the start of many new exceptional projects that are vibrant with colourful vocals and lustrous production, upping the sonic of 2020 to a higher level. Out of the bunch, Melbourne talent Cookii has graced the scene with hits such as ‘not that inna you’, ‘coca-cola’ and ‘little’, all making appearances in her new mixtape Blossom

Blossom encapsulates the feeling of growing up, with each song showing each experience of life, with a story-filled foundation. The sonic of this record obeys the theme, with the track ‘like like’ opening the mixtape with a colourful vibrance in its production and glossy vocals. With a vivid instrumental, the song leads into the next hit ‘not that inna you’, a song thronged with bedroom pop vocals, dreamy guitars and gleaming atmospheric hits, with Cookii describing it as her version of Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Since U Been Gone’. ‘big toe’ and ‘kelly' lend themselves to more vocal heavy performances, in turn relaxing the presence of the instrumental and accentuating the animation of Cookii’s vocals. In between these songs, we hear ‘little’, a cutesy pop ballad with an addictive bassline and a memorable chorus, working itself as a perfect marriage between Hyperpop and Indie Pop. Next we are ushered into ‘holiday’, a summer ready track filled with vibrant hits of Pop and R&B, becoming a standout from the rest on the mixtape.

Nearing the end of Blossom, we find ‘love yourself (spend forever)’, a club ready pop track filled with lustrous synths and vigorous violin stabs. With a tempo switch up towards the end, the track is a nod to the bubblegum genre. Finally, the last track ‘coca cola’, Cookii’s most voguish release of 2020, is a statement of her prowess as a producer. From memorable hooks referencing pop culture to luminous production, this track serves itself as a welcome reminder of why we fell in love with Cookii in the first place.

Throughout Blossom, we find Cookii experimenting with the hyperpop genre, lending itself as a refreshing take on pop music through fusions of various genres, making this mixtape a really special experience. We cannot wait to hear what’s next for Cookii!
