Extended Play 028: Self Tape - Trenches

Words by Luke Byatt

It’s taken me a hot minute to get around to writing this article on Self Tape’s sophomore EP, Trenches. The wait was definitely worth it, because the extended play is nothing short of a work of art. Comprised of three tracks, Trenches is equally raw in presentation as it is meticulous in execution.

The EP kicks off with a lush dance concoction with ‘Feel Me’. The single blossoms with pristine vocal samples as a grooving beat meanders effortlessly. The buoyant nature of ‘Feel Me’ then proceeds into ‘Trenches’; a single with slightly darker soundscape. The title track’s mystical aura ushers in the depths of the night acting as guiding force to the dance floor. Closing out Trenches is ‘Right Now’ a moody bop that reflects the full swing of a night out. A cyclical and repetitive character is central to the single as it oscillates between the sound system and listener’s soul. Self Tape has created a lavish record that is perfect for the club as it is to be listened to in headphones on a Sunday afternoon with a cocktail in hand.

Self Tape is undoubtably one of the best House producers to come out of Sydney in recent years. I can’t wait to hear what’s to come from this budding producer and DJ.
