Future Focus 005: Austen x Handsome x DVNA, 2 Man Embassy x Snocker, Nicole Millar

Welcome back to another rendition of Future Focus. In this feature we have two sultry remixes of Austen’s ‘Money’ from local legends, Handsome and DVNA, a mammoth collaboration from 2 Man Embassy and Snocker, and a single that marks new era for Nicole Millar.

Austen - Money (Handsome x DVNA Remixes)

Austen is back, but not how you’d expect, the Brissy based act has employed Handsome and DVNA for remixes of ‘Money’.

We previously described ‘Money’ as a “balance between underground and approachability”. Handsome envelopes herself around the single’s underground character, flipping the record into the realm of experimental pop. The ornate artistry of remixing a track is full apparent as original elements delicately dance through altered aspects, resulting in a completely different listening experience.

Known for her swooning R&B, the DVNA supersedes expectations, flipping ‘Money’ into a club ready house tune. The remix retains the “spirited tone and charismatic presentation” of the original composition while adding flair and an infectious aura. I could see DVNA’s flip being dropped into sets at renown house nights at Sydney’s Chinese Laundry, Melbourne’s Revolver or the iconic but now defunct TBC Club in Brisbane.

‘Money’ was the song off of the EP that I really wanted to hear reinterpreted because the sentiment had always felt destined to be reborn as a club track. It was cool to take the most “pop”-sounding song on the EP and have it completely flipped by two of my favourite Australian producers as something you can get down to. Handsome and DVNA are both artists I’ve followed for a while, both with really unique projects and I love what they’re doing. We wanted to use Aus Music Month as an opportunity to have a Yeah The Girls moment and celebrate the great female electronic talent in Australia with these remixes. Their interpretations are both so distinct and I’m stoked they could breathe such a cool new life into the song.

2 Man Embassy x Snocker - Memory (Feat. Perrin Xthona)

There’s a reason I love seeing emails from the team from CloudKid, the tastemaker and label have a knack of releasing top tier music.

The label’s latest bop to hit my inbox is 'Memory’ courtesy of 2 Man Embassy and Snocker, featuring Perrin Xthona on vocal duties. The bubbly pop ensemble blends grooving production with a lush vocal. The power of five minds working on ‘Memory’ is infused into the track’s delightful DNA. The syrupy nature of ‘Memory’ prompts resemblance with the sweet sonics of Louis The Child, San Holo, or Mura Masa. If you love dance pop, ‘Memory’ is a track that’ll be in your playlists looping all day.

‘Memory’ is the result of 24 hours of creativity between the five of us. We hit it off immediately after meeting with Nick (Snocker) and this song is a result of that. We really wanted to write a song about nostalgia and all the emotions tied to it, both good and bad; like when you’re missing someone special, but you’re still alive and vibing. We ended up bonding over the course of the session and had a blast making it.

Nicole Millar - Favours

Nicole Millar’s name that goes hand in hand with the Australian pop scene, now she’s returned with a new look and single, 'Favours’.

‘Favours’ mature sonic delivers a new era for Nicole Millar. The pristine pop composition is contorted into an enigmatic and mature tone. This subversion of expectations results in a refreshing rebrand. Nicole Millar has positioned herself as a power player for the decade to come. Be sure to keep a close eye on this audacious act as she’s set to claim the pop throne.

I had a bit of a rough year with a lot of changes. ‘Favours’ is a song about how I’ve got no praise, or money left for this person.
