Future Focus 007: Bajillionaire, POOLCLVB, Quiet Bison x capshun, Du0

Words by Luke Byatt

We’re one month into the year and there’s terrific tracks dropping left, right and centre. For this edition of Future Focus, I’ve selected three audacious Aussies making headway into 2020, plus an American who’s injecting flair into the scene. Opening this list is long time favourite Bajillionaire, followed by house staple POOLCLVB and vapour twitch producer Quiet Bison, and to close a double release from du0.

Bajillionaire - I Feel So Alone In This Club RN

Futuremag Music has been following Bajillionaire for a little over three years now. With each record it was clear that the young musician had a charismatic and quirky charm. ‘I Feel So Alone In This Club RN’, leans wholeheartedly into Bajillionaire’s genuine and relatable persona, with wit and a dash of humour. The single also marks a tilt into indie pop, with it being the first time the ascending act features his own vocals. In the current music landscape its unambiguously clear that Bajillionaire is unrivalled with his lush and introspective angle on pop. Since release, ‘I Feel So Alone In This Club RN’ has been on repeat, so I can safely say; I can’t wait to hear more from Bajillionaire.

I don’t really like clubs, I don’t really like the idea of clubbing, and going out just makes me wish I had a vice of some sort. I hope you like it. It really is just me on a page (or in a song). Honest, dumb and slightly inappropriate.

POOLCLVB - Erase (Feat. Moli)

Sydney groove house producer, POOLCLVB has dropped ‘Erase’ a sensual single featuring Moli. The single captures the essence of POOLCLVB’s captivating sonic while also exploring a fresh angle. The blend of melancholy lyrics and a uptempo composition result in a bop, imbued with raw emotion. This juxtaposition leads to a stirring dance experience destined for the dance floor. I can’t wait to hear what’s next in store for POOLCLVB.

Moli’s lyrics connected on a level that melted me the first time I heard it, and sung from her perspective, it’s like she’s held up a mirror to my own life experience. I thrive on that kind of collaboration. I love working with juxtaposition and I feel the contrast between the melancholy vocal and uptempo groove sections play nicely together, it’s been exciting to return to my club music roots.

Quiet Bison x capshun - Acai Tower

Since busting onto the scene Quiet Bison has enthralled me with his distinctive and avant-garde sonic. Now the rising star has teamed up with capshun, another promising act. Together the pair release ‘Acai Tower’, a record that rivals the production of Flume, What So Not or Troyboi. An angelic vocal flutters delicately as dynamic drums, boisterous bass and an undulating synth fragmentary consort. The glitchy and fractured nature of the single is carefully crafted to deliver a thought provoking yet palatable listening experience. I can’t get enough of Quiet Bison and I’m eager to see him propel up the ranks in 2020.

It had a vibrant and lush sound so I imagined an abstract place where fruit was floating freely and the walls were coated in a colour that was close to Jasper. Kind of abstract but that’s just what I thought of...

Duo - Come Home (Feat. Emily Coulston) / Better Place (Feat. CLOE TERARE)

Brisbane’s Du0 has dropped ‘Come Home’ and ‘Better Place’ a double collaboration with fellow river city residents, Emily Coulston and CLOE TERARE. The trio were hand picked to attend AMPLIFY, QMusic’s premiere songwriting camp. ‘Come Home’ and Better Place’ hold an innate intimacy that swells with sensuous affection. In ‘Come Home’ Emily Coulston’s vocals blossom over a verdant soundscape. For ‘Better Place’, CLOE TERARE’s radiant lyrics morph with an exquisite composition. Together with Emily Coulston and CLOE TERARE, Du0 has released two spirited singles that are certainly going to bolster his catalogue.

All three of us (along with six other musicians) got invited to attend QMusic’s exclusive Songwriting Retreat, AMPLIFY, that took place over three days at Heliport Studios in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. We were rotated in groups of threes and had to come up with a song from scratch, then produce and record it in the 4 hours we were together. We did this five times over the three days and we were given a mentor in each session who helped us get this massive task done. These two tracks were born out of those sessions.
