Taka Perry - Twenty (Feat. Stevan)

By Nathan Carol

Japanese-Australian producer Taka Perry and singer-songwriter Stevan take the stage to deliver their emphatic, bubbly, synth-charged collaboration in ‘Twenty’. The single swiftly dances and flows gracefully in its embrace of self-love throughout the track’s approximate three-minute run time.

Stevan’s brief allusion to the unexpected ramifications of COVID-19 in 2020 kicks the track off with the introduction of themes such as spurned relationships, self-love, self-doubt, and nostalgia. This is succinctly followed by the acceptance of past love life stumbles, tightened inner circles and the search for new friendships and meaningful relationships. Self-love is a poignant theme that shines the most in the line “she likes to love me; I like to love me.” and “sick of trying to wonder what these people think about me.”

The light-hearted introspective approach of embracing self-love and finding identity in oneself is encompassed by a buoyant soundscape served by Perry. In which fast drum lines, guitar riffs, synths, keys, and the support of occasional comedic sound effects serve to effectively encompass the lighthearted and buoyant nature, Stevan’s lyrical progression serves to achieve. Repeated listens by the listener is rewarded with the subtly increasing prominence of the rising synths and guitar riffs that supplement the track’s upbeat percussive lines, keys and synths. All of which exemplifies Perry’s strength in utilising his vast array of instrumental techniques in building an engaging soundscape.

While no single sonic component shines as the standout, the track’s value is found in the sum of its parts rather than the shine any single component may have to offer. Perry and Stevan pair well together delivering a tight all-round track that diversifies its sonic and lyrical approach in embracing self-love with minimal dead spaces throughout the track’s progression. Its tight pacing, engaging production value and sonic intricacy found through repeated listens, all serve to kick off what can only be expected as the first of many fruitful collaborations from the Australian duo.

Farrah x SENZA - TEMPLE

By Luke Byatt

Hong Kong based producer and DJ, Farrah has teamed up with San Francisco artist SENZA for the ultimate bass sensation in ‘TEMPLE’.

‘TEMPLE’ is a master class in Bass production, where brutal and bombastic climaxes are met with contrasting reserved moments. This balance between high octane energy and a somewhat somber semblance, allows the listener to digest ‘TEMPLE’s. intricacies. The ornate sonic architecture mirror’s the track’s real world counterpart, where spiritual rites are embarked upon. Farrah and SENZA have crafted a record that is equally emotionally rich as it is ready for the dance floor.

Be sure to keep an eye on Farrah and SENZA as they continue to climb the Bass scene.

GVY - Barriers

By Justin Pix

Brisbane powerhouse GVY storms the scene with his third instalment, ‘Barriers’. An elegant ballad with hallowing vocals and serene guitar melodies.

The song begins with a nebulous guitar, laying a foundation for GVY’s refined vocals. Shortly after, the track leads us with a chorus of heavenly vocals, comforting drums and airy synths. Respective to the Dream Pop genre, the effulgent instrumental creates waves of blissful soundscapes which calmly seep into the listeners ears. We see a flattering combination of the collected ballads of Indie Pop and the tranquility of Dream Pop production, letting the listener reside in the stripped back instrumental and reflect upon the brilliantly crafted lyrics.

This wave of wonderful Dream Pop marks the third release from GVY and we are excited for many more!
