Georgia Interview - Working the Dancefloor!

Interview by Sean Tayler

UK singer Georgia has just released the stunning ‘About Work the Dancefloor’ and completed her first Australian tour, supporting UK electro-rockers Jungle! Ahead of the tour, we had a chat to her about the dazzling music video, her collaboration with HONNE and everything exciting!

Futuremag Music: Hey Georgia! How have you been since you released ‘About Work the Dancefloor’?

Georgia: It’s been a really jam packed time. ‘Started Out’ did so well and kind of opened up a load of opportunities and it’s really been non-stop so far.

Futuremag Music: What does working the dancefloor mean to you?

Georgia: Well, it means so much! I made this song after a weekend in Berlin entirely dancing in a few clubs and I dare realised how important the dancefloor is to people to give them a certain relief from their everyday activities and then suddenly being able to have certain hedonistic  thrill-seeking opportunities in a safe space. Dancing is such a vital part of human anatomy, so it means everything really!

Futuremag Music: Let’s talk about that awesome music video! How did you come up with the idea for it?

Georgia: We were looking to do a video where I was featured in it the whole time and we asked for help from a video commissioner to seek some new and exciting underground video directors who could do something quite surreal and ‘out there’. We came across a really talented Spanish director called NYSU. His treatment was really cool. A dance floor based in this house with me doing normal activities but then suddenly discovering in the basement: the dance floor.

I guess in turn it had this metaphor for life and your mind. NYSU was really cool, he absolutely loved the song and I think that for me was really important. He even memorised the lyrics. It was entirely shot in Madrid. He used a model house built for the video.

Futuremag Music: Was the model house you used based off of a real house?

Georgia: I think he had the idea of type of house he wanted to create. But the model house wasn’t. It was designed to be a suburban type house, in areas where life is a bit simpler. But inside there’s this crazy basement disco. He wanted to contrast suburbia.

Futuremag Music: You’ve been playing shows with Jungle in Europe and now in Australia, how has the tour been?

Georgia: It’s been an absolute joy. We’re like a family and they’ve made me feel so welcome. I’m really thankful for the opportunity. I wanted to get over to Australia over anyway, I love the music that comes out of Australia. It’s a very creative place and I’m really chuffed that they’ve invited me on this leg. They’re really lovely, talented guys and the show that they’ve created is really phenomenal.

Futuremag Music: There’s so much good music coming out of the UK as well! What do you like most about the London music scene?

Georgia: I think London has always been a great multicultural and multi-ethnic place where a lot of people from around the world live and therefore the music that is created has that within it. Although it’s very saturated and very competitive, it’s really high class. Especially in the UK hip-hop and grime scenes, we’re seeing a lot more exposure in areas that perhaps there wasn’t always. We’ve always been a real lover of electronic and indie music.

I think at the moment, there’s a real great energy coming out of the city and perhaps it’s slightly political charged and chaotic, but it’s always been thought provoking and I think it has most to do with the landscape of London. It’s a forever changing landscape and I think music extends that in a way.

Futuremag Music: I’ve been loving a lot of London releases like Slowthai, Nilüfer Yanya and HONNE; who you collaborated with on their last album. How did you get in contact with them?

Georgia: The boys were looking for guest vocalists for the new record and a friend of mine who works in publishing put my name forward. They heard a couple of songs and they got in contact and ask me to drop by for a chat and created some music and asked if I fancied it and would like to jump on! It was very naturally done and we all felt ‘Location Unknown’ was there from the beginning of it. I came up with some melodies and lyrics, it was a really collaborative go. They formed it into what ‘Location Unknown’ is now, and I’m glad it’s done so well!

Futuremag Music: Should we be expecting new music from you soon?

Georgia: Yeah, totally! There’s new music coming and I’m really excited by it. I’m playing lots of shows and it’s going to be really exciting, the next music that’s going to be released. It’s not too different, but it’s going to be interesting to see the reaction.

Futuremag Music: I can’t wait to hear it! To wrap things up, if the Georgia project were a cocktail, what would you put in it?

Georgia: Haha okay, that’s an interesting question! At the moment I really love mezcal tequila. So we’ll do a mezcal mixed with some kind of berries and loads of ice, shaken and then maybe a bit of syrup to make it sweet.

Futuremag Music: That sounds amazing! Thank you so much for your time, I’m a huge fan of your music!

Georgia: Thank you, that means so much to me!
