EXTENDED PLAY 056: G FLIP | DRUMMER | ALBUM REVIEW

Words by Grace Gordon and Brooke Gibbs.

Aussie singer and drummer, G Flip, has broken the record for the most songs in a single Hottest 100! Now that’s impressive! With their debut album, Drummer, released last year and taking over the Hottest 100, this album is going to be hard for G Flip to top.

“Since I picked up the sticks at nine years old, I’ve been dreaming of a solo pop artist whose main instrument was drums. As the years have gone by, I realised that maybe that person I was dreaming of, was actually myself. So I made the record little G always wanted, DRUMMER, a pop album from a drummer’s perspective.”

After releasing first single About You, in 2018, it is evident to both Australian and international audiences just how far G-Flip (Georgia Flipo) has come. Though the title of their new debut album (now topping the ARIA charts) is DRUMMER, that certainly does not limit their musical capabilities. From guitar, bass and keys; even producing their own tracks, stating “There’s no loops that I got from the internet. Not saying that that’s a bad thing, but for my creative process I wanted it to be very hands-on and me physically playing everything." This is just the beginning for G-Flip. This sophomore album is an exceptional display of their talents and music making abilities, as well as the current tour allowing audiences all over the world to experience these tracks live.

Prior to its anticipated release, three tracks were released as singles being Be Your Man, The Worst Person Alive and Good Enough. Be Your Man a beautiful and bold tribute to their partner, Chrishell Stause, presenting the idea of not being what somebody planned, yet still accepting and deserving of each other’s love. G Flip stating: “True love has nothing to do with gender or external appearance. Although this song was inspired from my own queer perspective, the idea of being ‘not what you planned’ is relatable to anyone that has ever fought for someone to give them a chance at love.” This track follows G Flip and Stause growing up and not necessarily following the typical ideology of relationships found within the media, and now with representation in mainstream media, this is beginning to change. Audiences are welcomed into the hearts of G and Stause with lyrics including, “I understand ‘'cause I get you emotionally. I’m not a man, but I can if you want me to be,” and “I’m not what you planned, but I’ll be your man. The powerful lyrics leave an impact on listeners upon hearing this single for the first time.

The Worst Person Alive without a doubt, received the well-deserved attention it got. Coming in at number two in triple j’s Hottest 100, this song is catchy, fun, and makes me wish I was a drummer myself, with the air drums coming in with full action.

Despite the album being titled Drummer, track Australia showcases G Flip’s talent as not just the incredible drummer they area, but also their skills as a vocalist, songwriter and guitarist.

With G Flip kicking of the new year with their cover of Taylor Swift’s Cruel Summer, we can’t wait to see what 2024 has in store for them!
