INTO THE MOSH 008: WCB AT DARWIN FRINGE FESTIVAL

Words by Brooklyn Gibbs.

Do you want to feel enchanted, haunted and inspired at the same time? Then Sydney-based artist, WCB is the live act you’ll want to see! It’s clear why he was the Live Show Winner for the Artistic Merit Award at Newcastle Fringe 2022 and various other performance awards.

WCB brought his Sigil show to Darwin last weekend as part of the Darwin Fringe Festival. Sigil was a unique and enchanting exploration of musical spell-casting. With a surreal projected landscape, we followed WCB into his psych to reveal sometimes uncomfortable truths, but ultimately cathartic emotions. The performance was dark, and unnervingly sexy with WCB’s warm and haunting vocals, and physical aesthetic.

WCB performed two solo shows as part of the Darwin Fringe Festival and I was lucky enough to be able to catch him at both. Seeing the same setlist performed twice, two days in a row, may not be for some, but for me, both shows were a whole new experience separate from each other.

The audience was small in the first show, yet still clapped along and made the most of it. The second show had a much larger crowd, yet WCB delivered it with the same energy as he did his smaller show, which made it clear that he always goes on stage and gives it his best, no matter who is listening.

The second night even saw WCB get emotional, which is bound to happen when an artist writes and performs from the heart like he does. This just goes to show that each show is unique and different from one another, so if an artist you really like has multiple shows, it’s definitely worthwhile checking out more than one! You may even pick up on things you missed the first time, just like you do when re-watching movies.

WCB’s talent is exceptional and will blow you away. I must admit, I’m very glad that I didn’t do any background research before seeing WCB for the first time. Attending his show, and not knowing what to expect, I was completely knocked off my socks!

If you listened to any of WCB’s music, you would think he had the support of a band. However, Sigil was a solo show which proved just how exceptionally talented his is as a creative artist. With his dreamy landscapes, haunting vocals with equally-as-haunting looping and vocal effects, this show left me speechless and eager for more WCB.

WCB is a live act you won’t forgot. Be sure to follow him on his socials to catch his next live show.

Futuremag Music’s interview with the haunting WCB will be out this weekend!
