JEFFE Interview - Smooth Yet Spicy

Meet JEFFE, a Sydney muso with a knack of composing smooth electro with spicy segments sprinkled throughout. With the release of her singles ‘Undecided’ and ‘Whoever You Love, I'm Cool’, JEFFE has shot into sound systems both in Australia and internationally. We had a chat to JEFFE about her start in music, writing process, current headline tour, and more!

Futuremag Music: Jumping into it, can you talk us through your relationship with music over the years? How did you move into making music?

JEFFE: I've wanted to have a career in music since I can remember, I started writing properly and performing around the age of 15. Through my schooling years I was in a few different bands, one an indie/rock band, one a duet, I even played sax in the school band. I left school before graduating and went on to getting my Diploma in Music where I met my first serious duet partner, Georgia Rose. We were together for about 6 years and then I moved to Sydney doing my own acoustic solo project. I hooked up with a bunch of different producers because I desperately wanted to move onto more electronic stuff but nothing seemed to fit. Then I met Dave Hammer and JEFFE was born.

Futuremag Music: Your singles 'Undecided' and 'Whoever You Love, I'm Cool' are absolute jams! What is your process when writing a piece of music? What goes into the production and topline side of things?

JEFFE: All of the music I've written for JEFFE so far have been collaborations with Dave. We'll usually jump into the studio with a fresh session and a few ideas we've been sitting on over the days leading up to it. Generally it'll start of with Dave throwing a few samples he's created at me and I pick the one I like most, he'll then build a base track around that and I'll hum a melody along to it. Then we have a mad chat about what we want to write about and then try to bring it all together.

Futuremag Music: Can you talk us through your upcoming east coast tour? What are you looking forward to about the shows? How did you select your supports for each city? What's something you want fans to retain from your live show?

JEFFE: I cant wait to do my own tour in Aust! I must say I'm pretty nervous about it though, it's terrifying thinking people may not show up... It's like throwing a party.I picked the support acts from a handful of artists who have similar sounds to me. It just so happens that Violet (Sydney support) and Sam Phay (Melbourne support) are both friends of mine! I was super stoked when they were put forward to me so I jumped on it straight away.

I feel like my live set has progressed so much over the past couple of months, especially after touring Europe and the UK with HONNE, so I'm really excited to share that with people.

Futuremag Music: A funny one to wrap it up. If 'JEFFE' was a cocktail, what would be in it to best describe yourself and your music?

JEFFE: Ooo, thats a fun question! I'd have to go with an Old Fashioned. Not only is it my favourite cocktail but its characteristics seem to sum up my music quite well... Sweet but strong, smooth but sharp. Opposing forces that work well together.
