Kinder Interview - Infusing Our Favourite Styles

Meet Briony from DJ/producer duo Kinder. With the release of their debut single, ‘What You’re Like’, Kinder exceeded their DJ roots to become one of the most promising Australian electronic acts. We had a chat to Briony about the history of Kinder, their career in music, forthcoming performance at NYE In The Park, and much more!

Futuremag Music: Hi Briony, how's life, the universe, and everything?

Kinder: Hey hey! Life is good. The universe has been good to us lately, definitely have had some ups and downs but feeling great at the moment. We are ready for some summer touring.

Futuremag Music: Could you walk us through your relationship with with music over the years? How has the Kinder project evolved?

Kinder: We have such a diverse range of music we love and listen to. We have listened and played many different styles over the years. When we first started out we were playing all kinds of stuff like trap, hip hop and even very chill house. The past two years, we have been very focused sounds coming out of the Brazil bass movement. It’s interesting though because the music we have been writing lately is yet again a little different, we have sort of blended together a range of sounds.  You could say it’s very much influenced by those Brazilian bass sounds, as well as afro-beats underneath pop elements. We think it’s important to take what you love and be inspired by it, even if it means taking elements from many genres not just one. You never know what you can come up with by doing that.

Futuremag Music: Your debut single 'What You’re Like' was phenomenal. Can you outline the production and writing process for the single?

Kinder: Thank you so much. We actually had another song ready to release, and 'What You’re Like’ appeared at the last minute. The song was too good not to put out first. Savannah came up with the original idea for the chorus of the song and then played it to me. We then sat down on the piano and wrote the whole song in a day. We put a demo version down at a friends house and then showed our manager who also produces. So the 3 of us locked ourself in the studio for a few days and co-produced the song. It all came together very quickly.

Futuremag Music: What's the plan and musical direction for Kinder in the coming year?

Kinder: Touring lots! More music! Our shows are taking a new direction for sure, whilst we will still always incorporate energetic house tracks into our set, we want to also show case our own material now. This material will still stay in the dance world but has a slightly different feel now we are singing at the live shows. We actually have a new track coming out real soon that I think will really illustrate what we mean when we say we have infused our favourite styles. I’m really excited to put out our next single.

Futuremag Music: You're playing at NYE In The Park. What are you looking forward to about the festival? Who are you keen to see?

Kinder: Really excited to play for NYE In The Park! We have a couple of friends performing on that line up, so it will be nice to spend New Years with them. The whole line up is great. We are yet to see CXLOE live and we love her stuff, so we are quite excited for that, always great to see someone you love perform for the first time.

Futuremag Music: A funny one to wrap it up. If 'Kinder' was a cocktail, what would be in it to best describe yourselves and your music?

Kinder: If we were a cocktail we would be called, the “Wakey Wakey Shakey,” a drink made from Vodka, patron, pineapple, strawberry and sour straps. We both have a sweet tooth but our sets can be pretty full on, so you need a few spirits to get ya going that’s for sure!
