CREATIVE CONVERSATIONS 151: KLP ON LIVING IN THE MOMENT AND BEING PRESENT

Interview by Sam and Matilda Elliott.

Kicking off the year with her new single, KLP's signature sound is front and centre - pulsating beats, infectious piano hooks, and an irresistible top-line culminating in yet another scintillating anthem.

Over the years KLP has been known for her work as a radio host, producer and vocalist. However, it is now her unparalleled prowess as a writer and vocal producer that is catching the attention of producers and tastemaker labels all around the globe. Selected by Mall Grab to take part in the APRA songwriting camp at ADE last year, with a myriad of demos and collabs in the works, KLP is cementing herself on the global stage.

Futuremag Music caught up with KLP following the release of her new single, Symphony, ahead of her forthcoming EP due for release in June.

FMM: Congratulations on releasing your newest single, Symphony. Can you give us a rundown on what the track means to you?

KLP: I wrote this track in one of those moments where you feel a little overwhelmed, like you haven't done all the things you thought you would have done by that time in your life. The song has the lyrics about “running out of time. I I was really trying to write it out in song form so I could remind myself to live in the moment and be present.

FMM: How was the process of making the track for you?

KLP: I had the vocals and a scratch beat, but wasn't quite sure where to take it because it felt quite whimsical. I had shown a few people, looking for inspiration or feedback on what to do next, and one of those people was Dave Winnel. We've worked on a lot of music together now and so are often sending ideas back and forth. He worked his magic, and then the last missing piece was when another music mate, Loods, added some piano/keys.

FMM: You’ve given us this incredible track, but we hear whispers of an EP in the works coming near June. Can you give us some info about this release?

KLP: Yes! EP on the way. It’s close to finished now and I think it really shows the musical journey I've been on over this past year. Lots of experimenting with pushing my style and playing around with vocals in unusual ways.

FMM: You’re an incredible artist. Do you have a set way of creating tracks now? Is there a mojo you flow through?

KLP: It really changes from song to song. Sometimes, it’s the beat before the vocal/lyrics. Other times, something may have happened in my life and I need to get it out, so I start with a story or a vocal. Sometimes it’s as simple as a few-second-short voice note to myself while I’m out walking.

FMM: Something we love about you as an artist is your work on giving back to the music community, especially for up and comers. You recently ran a workshop in Melb/NAARM for female and gender-expansive artists. How was that for you?

KLP: It’s always so inspiring to be around other artists, sharing knowledge and telling stories together. That particular workshop was a collaboration with W Melbourne and they were so supportive and provided a perfect safe and creative space for us to all be together. I really look forward to continuing to do more of those kind of events in the future.

FMM: You also took part in the APRA Songhubs writing camp at ADE last October in Amsterdam curated by Mallgrab. What was that experience like?

KLP: I've been very lucky to have been part of many writing camps over the years, however this was my first time attending one in Amsterdam. In fact, I had never even been there, so it was all exciting and new. Writing camps like those are like speed dating of music creation, so you really need to be able to leave your ego at the door and just have fun with it. I made some great connections and hopefully some of the songs will see the light of day.

FMM: Drawing from this same point, do you have any advice for anyone hoping to get into the industry reading this who might be second guessing themselves?

KLP: Someone once gave me the piece of advice that at the time felt quite blunt, but now it’s so obviously true and almost a weight off your shoulders to realise -  ’No-one will ever care about your artist project as much as you do.’ So, back yourself. Life is too short. Do the thing. Go for it.

FMM: Now, we’ve been blessed an incredible single release. We heard whispers at Futuremag HQ that you’re doing a national tour! Can you please spill the beans and tell us a bit about this?

KLP: YES! I’ll be trying to visit as many spots around Australia as possible so please come and find me and say hello!

FFMM: What can we expect to see on your tour?

KLP: Lots of high energy and big, big positive vibes.
