MARLOE. Interview - No Set Method

We caught up with blossoming pop act MARLOE. Hailing from the Sunshine state, MARLOE. has been making waves with her self titled debut EP, among a slew of songwriting sessions with industry heavyweights. We spoke to the audacious act about her new single ‘Ruminate’, creative process and much more.

Futuremag Music: Hey MARLOE., how're you going?

Marloe: Hey! Yeah, I am doing pretty well thank you!

Futuremag Music: Could you please talk us through your creative process? How has it developed over time

Marloe: Right now there is no set method to my process. Sometimes I sit down with an idea and write lyrics off that, or I come up with melodies first and then add lyrics, other times things just hit me out of no where, like when I’m driving and I have to quickly pull over and write something down or voice memo it.

I think the biggest way it’s developed over time is how patient I am with myself. I let myself write things that maybe aren’t so good and don’t judge myself for it. I don’t expect to run my fastest mile every time and that allows me to experiment without doubts.

I see this changing in the future with how I trust myself and the process, believing more in what I feel is right for me. I think this will and allow me to take bigger risks and challenge myself more.

Futuremag Music: Your new single, 'Ruminate' brings in a fresh pop flair to the Australian scene. Could you outline the writing and production process for this single? Any stories behind the single?

Marloe: Yeah so I wrote this song when I had just come out of a relationship and I got excited that I was going to be able to experience how it feels to fall for someone again, so I thought why not write about it. I kind of took memories of different people and feelings I’d experienced over the years and pieced it all together to make this idea of a person that I was “falling” for. I worked on this single with Konstantin Kersting and I remember saying to him I wanted the song to feel bright and fluttery, similar to the feeling you get when you look at that person you really like.

Futuremag Music: Where do you see the Marloe project going in the future? What are your plans for the next 12 months?

Marloe: My plan for the next 12 months is to release more music, write a bunch with new people, play shows and hopefully shoot a music video. It’s been just under a year doing the Marloe project so I’m super excited to see how it keeps growing in the future, especially within the live show scene.

Futuremag Music: To wrap it up, if 'MARLOE' was a cocktail, what would be in it to best describe the project and its sound?

Marloe: Hmmm I think I’d be an Aperol spritz because they’re semi sweet and slightly bitter. My sound is fresh and zesty but my themes and lyrics are more complex and a little unexpected.
