May Lyn Interview - On Your Toes

Brisbane based singer and producer, May Lyn, has just announced a new EP and released two exciting new singles! ‘Froot Loop’ and ‘Like A Woman’ are out now. Following this release, we had a chat with May about the direction of her music.

Futuremag Music: What inspired you to release such bouncy and fun tracks like ‘Froot Loop’?

May Lyn: My previous EP, Vessels has a lot of dark, brooding tracks, 7 of them to be exact! The EP I put out before that is also more or less in the same vein. I feel like I have written plenty of music with that signature dark, cinematic may lyn sound, so this year I wanted to do something a bit different. I like the idea of keeping people on their toes wondering what will be next. It also keeps things interesting for myself to evolve as an artist and not have my music become too predictable. I’ve been playing Froot Loop and Like A Woman for a while in my live sets and they bring a refreshing playful and positive energy that my other songs don’t have.

Futuremag Music: Which direction do you feel your upcoming EP B.O.L.D. (Beauty of Life Divine) will approach?

May Lyn: It’s has a more confident, defiant attitude to it than most of the stuff I’ve released so far. I guess this reflects what I’ve been listening to in the past couple years and where I’m at right now as an artist. I’ve been in this game for a while and becoming more self assured with each step. Genre-wise the tracks are more soul, rnb & pop influenced. There’s one track with a bit of a dancehall rhythm to it. I’m trying to keep things fresh with each EP/album and it’s a fine balance keeping it familiar enough so I don’t sound completely like someone else, but also different enough for it to feel new and unexpected.

Futuremag Music: How has the year since your debut EP impacted up on you as an artist?

May Lyn: I’ve made new friends, met and collaborated with so many talented people since then, played interstate, done a bunch of gigs with crowd sizes I would’ve never imagined I’d be playing to a couple years ago, got nominated and performed at the QLD music awards and been a guest speaker/facilitator at producer workshops. Lots of new experiences, it’s been such a wild ride!

Futuremag Music: You’re gearing up to perform at Curiocity alongside some of our favourite local artists: Austen, LÂLKA and Feels. What do you have planned for your performance?

May Lyn: I’ve got a full live band playing at this gig. Tom on the guitar, Lexi on drums and Alex on sound. Alex will also be busting out some dance moves on stage!

Futuremag Music: 2019 is shaping up to be such an exciting year in music. What are some of your favourite recent releases?

May Lyn: Tiana Khasi - They Call Me

Genesis Owusu - Wit da Team

Coco - Committed

ZK King - Typhoon

Futuremag Music: Thank you so much for your time. To wrap things up, if your musical aesthetic was a cocktail, what would be in it?

May Lyn: To be honest, my knowledge on cocktails is not great. I’ve never been much of a drinker and gave up on alcohol completely about 2 years ago lol. For this particular record I would say something colourful, fruity and exciting, whatever that may be...A margarita sunrise? is that even a thing?
