EXTENDED PLAYLIST 073: WCB | MOON BOI | DEBUT EP REVIEW

Words by Sofia Perica.

WCB’s debut EP, Moon Boi seamlessly blends a kind of dark, psychedelic pop with soulful R&B to create a perfect concoction of ‘neo-soul’, as he describes it.

He creates this ominous and eery soundscape through his effortless minor key harmonies, particularly noted in Fooled Again. Coupled with the electronic synths and beat, it makes way for a sound that is totally unique. His music has almost got an ethereal quality to it; he has this alluring voice that feels hauntingly beautiful.

Moon Boi uses classic choral vocal layering, coupled with literal church organ sounds to create a chilling, almost spiritual sonic experience. WCB then juxtaposes this with an almost R&B beat and electronic-based rhythm. Listening to the EP felt like I was on the verge of a spiritual revelation, but simultaneously on the verge of a dance break.

But, then we go onto Picnics and Liquor that tends to lean into the classically electro-indie style. What I like about this song, is that it shows a more playful and careful side to WCB; the upbeat percussion and cheerful vocals really do make me want to go have a picnic with my friends and enjoy the outdoors. I really like how he experiments with hints of electric synth and a harsh beat. It creates such a smooth and textured listening experience.

This Sydney based artist brings you on a unique musical journey that is incredibly sonically intricate through his complex use of vocal layering and electronic production elements. Definitely worth a listen if you want to be both haunted and awe-inspired.
