Paces - Surging Sounds

A recent trip to Sydney landed me in the Metro Theatre’s sub venue, The Lair. The quaint industrial outlook tucked around the back side of George Street was the perfect platform to witness the surging sounds of Caitlin Medcalf, Austen, SŸDE, and headliner Paces.

Opening the evening was Caitlin Medcalf’s swift soundscapes. The Sydney based DJ welcomed the early comers with a selection of bubbly beats, and electrifying breakdowns.

Following suit was rising Brisbane pop star, Austen. You may recognise Austen from some of our other articles, or more broadly her blossoming presence in the wider music scene. The ascending act never ceases to disappoint, and continues to exceed expectations with her introspective and alluring electro pop. Performing originals such as ‘Faded’ and ‘Darkside’ along with a collection of covers and unreleased tracks, Austen amplified the animated aura.

Melbourne duo, SŸDE maintained the buoyant tones with their lush aesthetic. The pair’s live set was full to the brink with vibrant vistas, and boogie inducing breaks. SŸDE’s knack to blend approachable acoustic aspects with swelling electro has positioned the pair as a standout in a scene saturated with indistinguishable identities. I’m eager to see how these young musos continue to develop in time to come.

After three outstanding supports, Gold Coast heavy weight, Paces adorned the stage. The tastemaker brought his A-game, pumping out the best of his discography. The Lair’s capacity steadily grew as Paces forged a vigorous set full of audacious attitude, and lively lyrics. Austen returned to the stage for a passionate rendition of ‘Don’t Run’, elevating the euphoric aura. Sydney sider, CLYPSO appearance for ‘Going Mad’ was a grooving garnish that topped off the elating experience. Paces’ is a masterful performer with an innate understanding of how to work a crowd.

If Paces, Austen, or SŸDE are in your stretch of the woods, I highly suggest attending their show for an unforgettable experience. You can catch Paces on the rest of his national tour.
