The Kite String Tangle Interview - Something Dynamic
The Kite String Tangle has enjoyed a great run since the release of his breakthrough single ‘Given The Chance’ in 2013, now Danny the lad behind The Kite String Tangle is on the brink of releasing his self titled album. We had a chat to The Kite String Tangle about his creative process, his album and the future of the project.
Futuremag Music: How'd you initially move into music?
The Kite String Tangle: I first started music because I wanted to be a super cool pop punk kid. I was listening to Green Day and Blink 182 and Limp Bizkit, all the cool shit, haha. I started playing bass in a band in the UK when I was 12 and then moved over here and started playing guitar and fronting my own bands and eventually lead to a solo project; that being The Kite String Tangle.
Futuremag Music: What has been the biggest highlight in your music career so far?
The Kite String Tangle: Last time I played Splendour in the Grass was pretty huge. Had an amazing time and that’s when it really hit me that my music was resonating with people.
Futuremag Music: Our first taste of your forthcoming album was 'Selfish', and we thought it was a banger! How was the response?
The Kite String Tangle: We were really happy with the response. It was a little different from my previous stuff but not a crazy departure. Still was vocal driven and emotive but definitely a little informed by the energy of a live performance which is something I’ve been wanting to focus on a little bit.
Futuremag Music: What is your favourite song on the album and why? (If you had to pick one)
The Kite String Tangle: It’s really hard to pick a favourite because it changes all the time, but I’m really proud of a song called ‘Know By Now’ which is quite a personal, honest and vulnerable track and hopefully it can make people feel the same emotions that I felt when I was writing it. That can be really powerful.
Futuremag Music: Where and when did you record the album? Was there any particular themes driven through the album?
The Kite String Tangle: I recorded it over the past 2 or 3 years mostly in bedrooms of various houses in Brisbane where I live. I also recorded a bunch of strings and horns and acoustic instruments over a two week period in Sydney at a studio called Linear Recording studios. I don’t think there’s a super strong theme running through the album lyrically, it’s more a journey of self-discovery to my ears. A soundtrack to my own existential crisis.
Futuremag Music: How'd you meet Bridgette Amofah? What was it like working with her on your latest single 'The Prize'?
The Kite String Tangle: I somehow got hooked up with her in London while I was over there doing some writing sessions. We got along really well and kept in touch and then when she was over here touring with Rudimental we managed to hook up a session in Brisbane and she smashed out that vocal super quickly. She’s a pro with an incredible voice and such a fun hang too. Can’t say enough good things about her and the process.
Futuremag Music: If you could make a cocktail called 'The Kite String Tangle', what would you put into it? To best describe you and your music.
The Kite String Tangle: Maybe like a Long Island Iced Tea kind of situation. Something dynamic that makes you feel a lot of things :-P
Futuremag Music: What does the future hold for TKST project?
The Kite String Tangle: I’ll be doing some touring in support of the record for the rest of the year and of course some key festivals and touring a little bit with Odesza too. Can’t wait :-)
