THIS THAT: Essie Holt - A Few Curve Balls

We caught up with Melbourne pop act, Essie Holt ahead of her appearance at This That festival on November 9. We delved into her new single, ‘Last One’, creative process, and much more.

Futuremag Music: Hey Essie Holt, what's happening?

Essie Holt: Oh hi legends! I’m currently on a quick studio break, chatting with you!

Futuremag Music: Congratulations on the release of 'Last One', could you talk us through the writing and production process for the release? What is an aspect of the track you'd like listeners to look out for and absorb?

Essie Holt: Thanks! I wrote Last One with my producer Evan Klar around May this year. We sat at the piano and it came out really fast - I had a lot to say that day as I’d just had a big reflective time in a conversation with a friend the night before. It’s about realising what’s important in your life and finding a bit of a balance.

Futuremag Music: The release art for the single is fantastic too, what went into the visual design and photography?

Essie Holt: I had this crazy concept of wanting to be the ‘Last One’ at a fancy dinner party. I made a pretty elaborate Pinterest board with lots of references and a general vibe, and then I took it to my wonderful friend Giulia McGauran, who helped flesh out the concept with me and came up with this really fun set. She’s my favourite photographer by far and it’s an honour to work with her. We painted all of the fruit ourselves!

Futuremag Music: You'll be playing at THIS THAT later in the year, who on the line up are you keen to see? What are you bringing to the table for your festival set?

Essie Holt: I’m SO excited for THIS THAT! It’s my first festival and the line up is ridiculous. Very excited for Middle Kids, Meg Mac and Peking Duk! I’ve got a brand new live set and will be playing SO many new songs!

Futuremag Music: I know you're a bit of a sneaker fan, what do you look for when purchasing a new pair? What is your favourite pair of sneakers, either something you own or on your wish list?

Essie Holt: Oh yes I am! Melbourne has been so cold lately that I’ve been wearing my docs a lot more. But I do have my eye on a pair of new running shoes, because I’m very obsessed with long running right now!

Futuremag Music: To wrap it up, if Essie Holt was a cocktail, what would be in it to best describe yourself and your music?

Essie Holt: I reckon I’m a Negroni! A little hard hitting at first, because I like to throw a few curve balls in my tunes, but upon a few sips (listens) you’ll be in and wanting more.
