Thom Yorke - Suspirium

Ahead of the release of his soundtrack for the 2018 film remake of Suspiria, Thom Yorke has unveiled ‘Suspirium’; a masterpiece of melancholy electronica.

For a film as eerie and disturbing as the trailers build Suspiria to be, it’s interesting that Thom Yorke has chosen the lead single to be so calm and neutered. It’s a venture into eeriness through a deliberate lack of eeriness that relies on a trick as old as time, the scariest things go on in your imagination. Through the glittery charm that ‘Suspirium’ ordains, Yorke’s voice is strong and present while at the same time seeming to be miles away. As he sings, “All is well, as long as we keep spinning”, it’s easy to feel the vertigo hypnotically set in.

With clear influence from Yorke’s Radiohead track ‘No Surprises’, ‘Suspirium’ is the calm before the storm, and knowing that is what keeps this track spinning.
