Tycho Interview - A Sonic Spectrum
We caught up with Scott Hansen, the front man of the Tycho project. Tycho has been at the cutting edge of indie electronica with his vast and textured soundscapes. We spoke to Scott about the evolution of the project, his recent single ‘Pink & Blue’, forthcoming performance at this year’s Splendour and his Australian tour.
Futuremag Music: Hey Tycho, how's life, the universe and everything?
Tycho: The universe and life are very good! Excited to get this new music out and get back to touring.
Futuremag Music: Could you talk us through the evolution of the project?
Tycho: My goal has always been to evolve the sound and the parameters of what Tycho is. The biggest step was adding the band to the live show then recording with them and finally now adding vocals feels like the final piece of a puzzle falling into place.
Futuremag Music: The release of 'Pink & Blue' marks another step forward for Tycho. Could you talk us through the production process for the single and how you looped up with Saint Sinner?
Tycho: I met Hannah (Saint Sinner) through a friend when she was visiting San Francisco. I sent her some instrumentals I had been working on and she wrote all of the lyrics. It was interesting working with vocals in this way for the first time. I definitely wanted to give Hannah the freedom to do her thing without many constraints so I kind of just let the vocals go where she took them. It was a really interesting learning process making room for a voice, it’s such a strong presence in a song and my compositions are typically verse densely layered. It helped me see another side to the music that I hadn’t experienced previously.
Futuremag Music: Can you give us any insight to your next album? Will the same sonic theme as 'Pink & Blue' be present in the LP?
Tycho: If ‘Easy’ is at one end of the spectrum of this record then ‘Pink & Blue’ is certainly at the opposite end, everything else falls between the two. There are 5 vocal tracks, ‘Easy’ (which is sort of a hybrid) and two purely instrumental tracks.
Futuremag Music: You're also making your way to Australia. What are you looking forward to your tour?
Tycho: I love Australia, a lot of it really reminds me of home in California. It’s a massive honour to get to play the Sydney Opera House, so that will certainly be a highlight. Yeah we always try to change things up for festival shows, especially Splendour, we usually try to make them a little more energetic and dynamic.
Futuremag Music: A funny one to wrap it up, if 'Tycho' was a cocktail, what would be in it to best describe yourself and your music?
Tycho: Grapefruit and mezcal on the rocks with some salt.
