BUOY Interview - I'm All About Swimming
Meet BUOY, one of our favourite producers in the game. The Sydney local is best known for her work with synthesisers, and her ability to create sonic textures of ethereal pop. The Sydney local will be be leading a small group session on the ins and outs of synths, as part of the Women In Electronic Music Masterclasses.
We chat to BUOY about the creative process in music, and her involvement in the masterclasses!
Futuremag Music: What inspired you to start a career in the music industry?
BUOY: Just the joy I get from playing music, and encouragement from my friends. It's no easy road though... That's for sure, but I wouldn't be doing anything else.
Futuremag Music: How did it feel to open for Corrine Bailey Rae in April?
BUOY: It was such a nice time. She is the most lovely, glowing, smiley person. Her audience was beautiful and I felt really privileged to open for her. Even though our genres are a bit different, we are all connected on a deeper level. It's a beautiful thing to witness somebody being so true to who they are and expressing themselves so honestly and fearlessly. That was Corrine!
Futuremag Music: If you could work with any major producer, who would it be and why?
BUOY: Hmmm I would pick Kanye. He can be a bit crazy sometimes, but I love his music. I love the intensity in it. He's turned up in my dreams a couple of times over the years, like he's my buddy. Him and Jay Z.
Futuremag Music: What was your first reaction to being invited to the Women in Electronic Music Masterclasses for 2017?
BUOY: Well I was involved last year, so I've already seen how great a thing it is. We femmes haven't had much encouragement in this area and I wish something like this was running a few years earlier for my younger self! In saying that, my reaction was still to feel a bit scared! To sign yourself up to stand in front of people and teach them stuff, you know. I get tongue tied and stutter, but the masterclass for women is more important than my fears of public speaking and I am actually really excited!
Futuremag Music: Can you give us some insight to what you’re teaching at the masterclasses, and what you’d like the attendees to take away from the experience?
BUOY: I'll be giving a rundown of synthesizers and the basics of how they work. It's pretty exciting when you know exactly what each knob does. It's also exciting when you hear synths in other songs and you can tell the general patch that was used, and you know how to recreate it yourself. I'd love for attendees to gain some confidence in learning about this.
Futuremag Music: Do you find that you also learn from other artists while at these masterclasses?
BUOY: I don't really get to spend much time with the other artists who are teaching the master classes (I wish I could go to some of the other classes myself!), but I adored meeting all the attendees last year and I loved hearing their stories and goals. We are all on the same journey!
Futuremag Music: Are you stoked with the response from your 'Break' EP?
BUOY: Yep I was definitely stoked. People have been so kind. It makes me so happy that I'm able to share my music and to have it received like this. I can't wait for the next few things.... :)
Futuremag Music: If you could make a cocktail called ‘Buoy’, what would you put into it? To best describe you and your music?
BUOY: I'm not sure, but it would be blue because I'm all about swimming.
