CREATIVE CONVERSATIONS 101: CARLA WEHBE ON BEING AN INTROVERT WITH EXTRAVERTED EXPECTATIONS

Interview by Brooke Gibbs.

Do you ever feel like an introvert with extraverted expectations? Well Carla Wehbe has you covered with her latest release!

introvert (with extroverted expectations) builds and swells with uncomfortable truths and lyrical defiance, presenting a subtle, yet powerful display of Carla’s unconventional uniqueness of vision. It tells Carla’s story about her struggle with being a massive introvert but still wanting to feel included and invited to things her friends are doing, even though she’ll probably say no to most of the invites.

Carla Wehbe and Charlie Collins will also be hosting a Holiday Hoedown event later this month with an incredible lineup of artists and talent!

Futuremag Music’s Brooke Gibbs caught up with Carla Wehbe about all things being introverted, excuses to get out of social invitations, Hannah Montana’s Hoedown Throwdown, space cowboys, and everything in-between.

FMM: Congrats on your latest release. How does it feel to have it out there and what has the reaction been like so far?

Carla: Thanks so much! I'm so happy to finally be able to share this song. I feel like it gives more of a personal insight in to who I am as a person. So far it seems like a lot of people really relate which is awesome to see.

FMM: Introverted (with extroverted expectations) is a very unique title. I love it! Could you please walk us through what this means to you and what inspired this release?

Carla: Being a massive introvert myself, I definitely prefer nights in to going out maybe 90% of the time, but I also am someone who feels left out if I'm not invited to something my friends are doing. So, essentially the song is about wanting to be thought of but not necessarily wanting to commit to plans, but still always wanting the invite.

FMM: What does being an introvert with extroverted expectations look like for you?

Carla: It means constantly thinking of excuses to get out of plans past me agreed to, but also when I do get the invite and go out, wishing I was home.

FMM: The accompanying visualiser is spectacular! It compliments your vocals and the song’s message so beautifully. How did this visualiser come about?

Carla: The visualiser is actually the prequel to is forever off the table? We wanted to do something super simple that conveyed the isolation I sometimes feel being an introvert.

FMM: This is such a catchy song! I can just imagine all the introverts staying in and having a dance party to this release. How do you hope they feel when they listen to this track?

Carla: I hope they feel seen and are not alone for wanting to be alone.

FMM: As an introvert, what are some of the best and worst excuses you’ve used to get out of social invites?

Carla: Best excuse - sorry, I can't come I'm answering an interview for Futuremag!

Worst excuse - my car got locked in the garage and I can't get it out.

FMM: This release follows the success of is forever off the table? which Nic Kelly titled one of the year’s best pop songs. That’s a huge compliment to your art! How does this well-earned title feel?

Carla: It’s mind blowing to think that a song I wrote with some friends in a house in Kangaroo Valley would receive such incredible reactions from people such as Nick Kelly, who's such a respected voice in the industry. I couldn't be more grateful that people have loved it.

FMM: The song also landed in one of TikTok’s Top 10 Trending Sounds. Did you ever anticipate this kind of success?

Carla: I actually didn't even know that, so that's crazy to me and I absolutely didn't anticipate it at all!

FMM: You have a Holiday Hoedown show coming up with Charlie Collins which sounds super exciting! Great way to kick off the festive period too! What can people expect from the show?

Carla: Just a really fun night celebrating the year we've had with a bunch of amazing Aussie artists who just happen to be some of our closest friends. Originals, covers Christmas songs. It's going to be a really great night so we hope to see everyone there!

FMM: You have a super cool and talented list of guest performers joining you too! What makes these artists the perfect fit for the hoedown?

Carla: They're all such incredible artists in their own right, and they're all our really good friends so we wanted to share the night and stage with them!

FMM: With a Holiday Hoedown, it would only make sense to cover the good ole Hoedown Throwdown from the Hannah Montana movie in your set list! Is this on the cards?

Carla: Charlie didn't know what the Hoedown Throwdown was, so we almost had to cancel the whole show haha. I am still trying to get it in there, but either way Xavier Dunn will be playing it in his DJ set, so it will definitely make a guest appearance.

 FMM: What’s next for you?

Carla: More music, more shows, and my clothing label 'space cowboy' that I'm currently working on!

FMM: Any other comments you would like to make about your release, music, etc?

Carla: I just want to say that I really appreciate all the support and everyone who listens. It means the world to me and I can't wait to play shows and meet the people who listen to my music!
