Charli XCX - Glossy Electro Pop

While in Australia supporting Taylor Swift’s stadium tour, UK’s pop sensation Charli XCX has also descended into nightclubs across the country for a series of intimate Y2K themed afterparties. I was lucky enough to come along to the Brisbane show at The Flying Cock.

Opening the Brisbane leg of the tour was local legend LÂLKA. A glossy electro pop singer, LÂLKA is taking the country’s radio waves by storm with the release of her newest single ‘CTRL ALTer ego’. LÂLKA served a delicious, short and sweet set.

Following LÂLKA, upcoming DJ Baby Mama laid down a hip-hop infused set. Brissy’s leading rap star, Jesswar made a surprise appearance for a ferociously cool performance.

Before long, it was time for music icon and sensation Miss Blanks. Playing singles including ‘Good Good D’ and ‘Skinny Bitches’ as well as, a sparkling and sexy unreleased single called ‘Tommy Hilfiger’, Miss Blanks succeeded in reminding us of her position at the forefront of Brisbane’s hip-hop scene.

Melbourne musician, Banoffee performed the 1999 parties in Melbourne and Sydney, before returning to Brisbane with excitable charisma. Playing a selection of her bops and an unreleased track produced by SOPHIE, the crowd was enticed for Charli XCX’s set.

Just after midnight, Charli XCX emerged to perform a number of her more experimental tracks. To great applause, Charli XCX opened with her collaboration with SOPHIE, ‘Vroom Vroom’. The UK star also crowd surfed during her track ‘I Got It’ and whilst performing a SOPHIE cover of ‘Faceshopping’. Her live show was incredibly intimate, as the entire audience were not only actively screaming the lyrics but performing with her. Charli XCX’s live set provided an insight into the future of pop music.
