INTO THE MOSH O68: CHROMEO | THE METRO THEATRE | GALLERY AND REVIEW
Words and Photography by Adrienne Armida.
Before I set foot into Sydney's Metro Theatre, I knew I was in for an epic night. The buzzing fans provided energy from the very first moment and were a beautiful reminder of why we love music so much. Two decades deep into their illustrious synth-electro funk journey, Dave 1 and P-Thugg delivered a night of non-stop infectious hooks and unforgettable visuals. But the dynamic Montreal duo do one thing specifically well - connecting with their crowd. From start to end it was a dream show, and if cloud nine is the peak, then I left on cloud twenty.
Opening with fan-favourite Fancy Footwork, the crowd erupted in excitement. Dave 1 and P-Thugg's charisma filled the room, and their magnetic synergy is truly rare. The fans instantly surrendered to the undeniable groove, turning the Metro into a giant dance party.
Bad Decisions was one of the most notable moments of the night, infusing the venue with its infectious blend of analog synth sonics and funky beats, propelling the vibrant tone of the night. The undeniable banger Jealous (I Ain't with It) enveloped the crowd (myself included!) with its iconic synth hooks - a 3:48 minute time machine to an 80s-inspired electro funk paradise, making me long for a decade I was never a part of.
Over Your Shoulder served those soulful vibes, seamlessly blending funky basslines with synth-driven melodies, showcasing Chromeo's remarkable versatility. These standout songs were perfect showcases for the duo's prowess in crafting electro-funk masterpieces and provided a much-loved dynamic soundtrack to a much anticipated (and 'overdue,' according to the fans) night in Sydney.
The visuals were a main character and have to be some of the best I've ever seen at the Metro. Dave 1's metallic silver guitar was reflective, and boy did he know it. He would stand centre stage and use it to create beams of lights all over the room, which is something I've never seen on stage and it blew my mind. The entire spectacle added an extra layer of excitement to an already mind-blowing show.
After an unforgettable set, Chromeo came back for an encore that left everyone literally begging for more. I could feel the anticipation building as they kicked off the encore with Don't Turn the Lights On. Then, they seamlessly transitioned into 100%, and if it were possible, the energy in the room went up another notch. We were all singing at the top of our lungs. For their final song, Chromeo chose their newest, Personal Effects. This new track was an absolute gem and the die-hards already knew every single word. It was the perfect ending to an already remarkable night.
P-Thugg's ability to multitask between bass, vocals and keyboard had me floored and Dave 1's talent for shifting between pop/funk/rock-god was unlike anything I'd seen. Their genuine connection with the fans, the mesmerizing lights, the energy and that phenomenal encore combined to create a night we'll be reminiscing about for years to come. They also ensured they wouldn't be waiting another 11 years as they "already have their dates booked for next year." A 10/10 concert. It was a celebration of the magical bond that music creates between people and the incredible and unique talent that only Chromeo possess.
