Creative Conversations 012: Yuma X's Secret Lover

Interview by Luke Byatt

We caught up with Yuma X to chat about their new release ‘Secret Lover’ and the associated music video.

Futuremag Music: Hey Yuma X, how are you both doing? Congratulations on the release of 'Secret Lover', could you talk us through the writing and production process of the single?

Yuma X: Thank you so much! We’re doing well, taking this all day by day! ‘Secret Lover’ came about in a session with the lovely Lucy Taylor. We started shooting back and forth some ideas and landed on the theme of unrequited love, and then the song wrote itself within an hour or two. It was pretty great. On the day of us writing it we just wrote over the top of some chords that Jake had put down, and then later on the song was produced properly back in our studio.

Futuremag Music: Accompanying the record is a wonderful music video directed by Maddy King. How did you collaborate with Maddy and team to reinterpret the record into a film?

Yuma X: To be honest, Maddy and her incredible team get full credit for this. She and Lukas wrote the treatment for the video which is awesome because it was an interpretation of the song that, of which we hadn’t given any instruction or guidelines to write within or around and they nailed it. Its so so beautiful!

Futuremag Music: What does the rest of 2020 hold for the Yuma X project?

Yuma X: The rest of 2020 is hard to pin down at the moment but we definitely have more music to release and hopefully some shows if that’s what the legislation will be allowing by then!

Futuremag Music: To wrap it up, if Yuma X was a cocktail, what would be in it to best describe the project?

Yuma X: We think we’d make a pretty good spicy Tommys margarita. Tequila for a fun time, lime to keep you on your toes, agave because we have our sweet moments, and a bit of spice to you remember us after you’ve had a taste. Oh yeah!
