Creative Conversations 016: Niterunner's Nostalgic Semblence

Words by Luke Byatt

Brother sister trio, Niterunner are back with another sensational single ‘Right Direction’. We first discovered that band a couple of years ago with their single ‘Impatient’, since then they’ve been developing their sonic. We caught up with the family to chat through their new single and much more.

Futuremag Music: Hey Niterunner, how're you doing?

Niterunner: We are doing great thanks!

Futuremag Music: Last time we interviewed you was in 2017! What's been happening? Talk us through your musical journey over the past couple of years.

Niterunner: It has been a little quiet for us during the last 2 years! We have been living in 2 different places, Daniel in Byron, Andrea and Cale in Brisbane both working 6 days a week, as well as Cale now being a father, it's been a little more difficult to find the time. We do have some more music in the works that we have been working on slowly, so we are excited to get back into rhythm!

Futuremag Music: Congratulations on the release of 'Right Direction', it's a grooving sonic concoction. Could you outline the production and writing process of the record?

Niterunner: Thanks! It all started with the intro chords we had recorded years ago and deciding where to take it from there. This song went through so many changes and was definitely the hardest, production wise, to finish. Originally, we had a 4/4 drum pattern and a completely different song structure with 2 choruses, no bridge and a longer outro. The vocal melody and lyrics came quickly after that. After playing around with a couple of different versions and seeking some feedback, we then worked on some more ideas with our mixing engineer Anthony Garvin. After some more changes that reflected a more pop-based structure and some back and forth with finishing final touches, ‘Right Direction’ was ready!

Futuremag Music: What does the future hold for the Niterunner project?

Niterunner: More writing and releases – expect to hear from us in the not-too-distant future.

Futuremag Music: To wrap it up our iconic cocktail question... If 'Right Direction' was a cocktail, what would be in it to best describe the track?

Niterunner: Chilli lychee margarita. Firstly, some sugar for the sweet, soft vocals. Next, chilli and smoked paprika salt to cut through the mix with a more upbeat production than usual. Lastly, white rum to add a kick – much needed after the struggle of working on this release living in 2 different states during COVID-19. Top it off with a squeeze of lime juice for something fresh and unexpected.
