CREATIVE CONVERSATIONS 066: RARIa shares what it’s like to meet her family in hilarious release ‘Kill You boy’

Words by Brooklyn Gibbs.

Have you ever had to face the daunting experience of taking a new partner home to meet your family? Particularly when your family is super protective and from a traditional European background? Melbourne artist RARIA shares her experience in Kill You Boy.

Futuremag Music caught up with RARIA again to talk about what it is her family might do if you break her heart.

FMM: Congrats on the release of your latest song baby, Kill You Boy. What has the reaction been like so far?

RARIA: The reaction has been incredible! I was not expecting this much love from Spotify and my listeners! I even made a Spotify playlist cover for the first time. I was so shocked! It’s such an amazing feeling to have this much support. I’m feeling very grateful.

FMM: This is a VERY fun song, so I feel like we can have a bit of fun with the following questions (laughs!) Kill You Boy tells the story of what it’s like for you to bring a guy home to meet your family for the first time. The song mentions your parents, uncle and brother. So, who would you describe as the most protective in your family when introducing someone new to them?

RARIA: Oooooo this is a hard question because I feel like my whole family is super protective, BUT if I had to choose one, it would be my dad! If he doesn’t like someone, he makes it very obvious! So, I’d say he is the most protective for sure.

FMM: Okay, time to put our creative thinking caps on! In the song, you sing ‘They’ll find your address, and they’ll kill you boy.’ You also sing about a ‘trip down to the river.’ Walk me through what your family would do if someone still chose to break your heart after hearing this public warning!

RARIA: Well, obviously I don’t want anyone going to jail, but if someone did break my heart, my Dad, brother and uncles might have to whip out the wooden spoon. Then again, I think losing my beautiful family and I would be the biggest punishment of all!

FMM: I love that your family all came together to support this release by being in your music video. Did you have to do a lot of convincing to get them to do this video? Or is it something they jumped straight on?

RARIA: They were definitely on board with it from the beginning! I love them, but this was the hardest video I’ve ever had to create. Firstly, just finding a day that everyone was free to film was so hard! I also thrifted everyone’s outfits, which was a challenge because I had to guess everyone’s sizes. But, it all came together in the end. I’m so happy with how it ended up looking!

FMM: I believe you directed the Kill You Boy music video yourself? What was it like to be the director of your own musical creation, especially when the actors are all people so close to your heart?

RARIA: I had the best time. I mean, it was very stressful, but it’s always so rewarding creating your own music video and visuals for your artist project. I love making my visions come to life and explaining what the songs are about. I think I’ve become more confident in my own creative direction over the past year, so it’s been great to take as much creative control over my visuals as I have been in my music.

FMM: For any boys listening to this song, who may have their eyes on RARIA, what piece of advice do you have for them?

RARIA: Impress my family and you’re in my good books. Just don’t break my heart!

FMM: I see you’re currently in Europe! I love watching your adventures on your Instagram story. What are you up to over there?

RARIA: Yesssss I am! I’m currently escaping the cold, Australian Winter, but I’m also on the hunt for lots of inspiration for new song ideas. I always come back from travel with so many new ideas and I’ve definitely missed it over the past couple of years. I can’t wait to get back home and hash out all these ideas I’m writing down.

FMM: What’s next for RARIA?

RARIA: Shows! Shows! Shows! Lots more music! And of course, lots more Italian food hehe.
