CREATIVE CONVERSATIONS 093: JASON SINGH

Multi-Platinum award winning Singer/Songwriter/Musician/Artist, Jason Singh has just recently performed an enormous sold-out gig performing ‘Heaven’s Greatest Hits’ - a concept devised to honour incredible artists who have passed away. I spoke with Jason about this concept and the shows that have followed.

FMM: Hi Jason, congrats on the sold-out show at The Palms. You got through 50+ songs in the gig! How’d you manage that timewise?

Jason: Thank you, it was such a dream come true that show and I can’t wait to do it all over again in March.  Timewise, I just play the songs really, really fast haha! No, just kidding.  I've made the whole show into medley’s, so each artist gets their own 15-minute medley, where I fit as many of their hits in as possible.

FMM: I really like the ‘Heaven’s Greatest Hits’ concept. Celebrating so many artists who have died and carrying on their legacy. Obviously, death is a part of life, but a lot of these artists you cover have also had very short lives. When did this idea come to you?

Jason: This idea came to me in 2018 when I released my ‘Vale’ album.  In 2016, we lost so many incredible artists like: Prince, Bowie and George Michael all in the same year and I wanted to pay tribute to these amazing artists. They all helped shape me as a person, so I made that album and that has now turned into ‘Heaven’s Greatest Hits’ the show.

FMM: What’s it like being able to perform these songs that represent these artists?

Jason: This song list consists of the greatest music of all time, period.  You won't find a better list of songs on planet earth.  It's a great challenge to have a crack at so many different styles that’s for sure.  But I love them all and they’re all still so timely to this day, they’ll never be forgotten.

FMM: How does the crowd respond at these shows? Is it an emotional vibe at times, or more of a celebration of these artists as well?

Jason: It really is a journey through my life, in terms of the type of music that influenced me as a performer and as a man.  It's a celebration at times, but also quite emotional at times. The crowd is a huge part of this show. They take the ride with me and hang on all the way to the end.  It’s an amazing feeling and vibe.

FMM: You’re locked in for an encore show at The Palms in March. How keen are you to return after your recent gig?

Jason: ‘The Palms’ is one of, if not the best venue, in the country.  Especially for a show like ‘Heaven’s Greatest Hits.’ You can see from every seat in the house. The sound is amazing, and the lights are incredible.

FMM: Is there an artist you enjoy covering more often? Or a song you like playing the most, or get the best reaction from the crowd for?

Jason: Prince for me is a favourite. ‘Purple Rain’ is one of my encore songs.  He had such a massive influence on my life. But it is very hard to decide, because the whole show has big moments from my life.
