Crooked Colours Interview - Something Unique

Perth’s indie electronic trio, Crooked Colours have made some racket for themselves over the past year! The boys have been building up a huge amount of excitement surrounding their debut album Vera, and are about to hit the road on a national tour! We had a chat to Crooked Colours about their debut album, touring, and more!

Futuremag Music: What inspired you to start a career in the music industry?

Crooked Colours: I guess for us it just started from a mutual love of music and particularly live music. We all grew up writing and playing in bands and going to shows. It was only a matter of time before we started entertaining the idea of making a career out of it.

Futuremag Music: How did you guys meet?

Crooked Colours: The three of us grew up in the same community in the south west, and we just met through mutual friends. We started jamming together for a couple of months and just really liked playing together and trying out things musically.

Futuremag Music:  How'd you find the response for your Vera LP? What are your personal favourites on the album?

Crooked Colours: Yeah we are super stoked. It’s the end result of a lot of hard work for us and also our team and we’re all really happy with the feedback so far. I think for me (Phil) the standouts are ‘Flow’ and ‘Perfect Run’, but we’ve had different responses from a lot of people and I think thats a really positive thing. It kind of shows there’s something for everyone on the record.

Futuremag Music: Almost everyone has a go to piece of gear, what's yours?

Crooked Colours: Leon has an original Korg MS20 which he’s had for years and it seems to find its way onto most of our tracks. It’s just such a versatile synth. You can pretty find something unique every time you turn it on and at the same time you can very easily dial up exactly the sound you have in mind for a particular part.

Futuremag Music: What can we expect from the Vera tour? How'd you pick your support act Muto?

Crooked Colours: We’re doing the biggest shows we’ve ever done so we’re really excited to get on the road. We’ve got some cool surprises in store and a really good team we’re touring with so it should be a bit of fun. We actually met Muto about a year ago in Sydney and we’ve just been blown away by the run he’s had over the last few months. He’s also got a killer live set, so he was a no brainer to get onto the tour.

Futuremag Music: If you could make a cocktail called ‘Crooked Colours’, what would you put into it? To best describe you and your music?

Crooked Colours: Something along the lines of a B52. Nice and creamy with a bit of a kick to it.

Futuremag Music: What does the future hold for Crooked Colours?

Crooked Colours: Basically just try and get the live show trouping as much as possible. National tour in August, European tour in October and then get over to the US hopefully. After that we’ll knuckle down and get the second album under the belt.
