EXTENDED PLAY 037: METHYL ETHEL TALKS LOUDER IN NEW SINGLE, TALK LOUDER
Words by Sam Elliott.
Only five months after Are You Haunted, the newest addition to the Methyl Ethel repertoire, the Western Australian producer, multi-instrumentalist, and all-around icon Jake Webb, aka Methyl Ethel, has continued strength to strength with their newest single, Talk Louder.
After an amazing round of shows, playing to sold out crowds, Methyl Ethel has graced us again with their newest single. Talk Louder is fresh and fun. It feels light and airy, while also delving into this kind of horresque struggle. You can’t help but become entranced in the melodic musings of this tune, whilst also feeling a bit like the hair on the back of your neck won’t settle down.
Talk Louder is a bit of a refresh for Methyl Ethel - a note to get out of Webb’s head.
“I recently made a few songs to play on a dock, in Fremantle harbour, in a pop-up township for an arts festival. I wanted to just make something fresh and free-spirited, without too much thought, be instinctual. This, in part, is definitely a reaction to the album I just finished, which I worked on for about two years. The whole song, lyrics and all came out very stream-of-conscious, nothing was written down. For me, they reflect a certain ‘caught in your own head’ feeling that, I suppose, was partially the impetus for the music to begin with," said Webb on the track.
Methyl Ethel makes music that draws from myriad influences and a history of new wave and indie rock, all whilst sounding like its own thing entirely. Both familiar and alien, intimate and aloof, you never quite know what you’re in for, but the trip is bound to be enchanting.
What we love about the progression of Methyl Ethel evolving from a solo bedroom recording project into what is now a six-piece live band, evolving from penning pieces in their room to now playing sold-out shows, is that their unique demeanor has always remained the same. You’re always left with a decadence and grandness of melodies and sounds cascading through your mind.
The six-piece live band will take to the stage at Splendour in the Grass, which follows on from multiple sold-out headline shows and appearances at Perth and Meadow Festivals.
I for one, cannot wait to see Methyl Ethyl, and this new track live at Splendour!
