EXTENDED PLAY 079: KYARA | YEARN | MUSIC VIDEO

Words by Adeline Chai.

Sydney-based artist KYARA’s dreamy universe of synth-pop has only gotten larger with a new music video for her debut single, Yearn.

The visuals transport listeners to KYARA’s bedroom for approximately three minutes, where she takes us into her world of yearning and female empowerment. KYARA’s work speaks for itself sonically — Yearn feels polished and self-assured to the point that it doesn’t feel like a debut track — but KYARA makes it clear in Yearn’s video that she possesses the star quality necessary for the carving of a platinum pop star.

Without props, KYARA relies on her presence alone to drive Yearn’s message home. “I want the kind of love that keeps you yearning for me,” she sings alluringly while staring straight at the camera, basking in red neon light. Every frame of KYARA feels hypnotic and her body language all the more captivating, transforming every lyric into a command rather than a spoken manifestation. This confidence KYARA has embodied in her persona makes her the next Aussie alt-pop girl to watch.

KYARA embodies the endearing offhandedness of Tashi Duncan (Challengers) perfectly, who stars in the film that so happens to be the inspiration behind the song. This display of uninhibitedness comes from knowing you’re a catch and unapologetically owning it. Both Challengers and Yearn’s music video feel like a fever dream: viewers may find that time passes by too quickly in both worlds. Before we know it, we’re cast back into reality with little to no explanation of what had just unfolded, and there’s something so alluring about being left with a mystery that’s up for interpretation. Yet if I had the opportunity to choose, I’d like to linger in KYARA’s world — in which she places women and their desires at the centre — for just a little longer. Watch this space — soon enough, KYARA will be all over the radio just in time for Hot Girl Summer, and I’m yearning for more.
