Godlands Interview - An Unmissable Act
Meet Godlands, one of the forerunners in the new wave of Australian electronic music. Her heaving club anthems, and forward thinking sound design has positioned Godlands as an unmissable act. We had a chat to Godlands about her new single 'Everybody Knows' and her upcoming performances at Touch Bass Festival.

Futuremag Music: How’d you move into the music scene?
Godlands: I’ve come from a sporting sort of family, so I was always the black sheep in the family. I pathed my own way really, I started playing drums, piano and getting into music. Nothing really stuck with me besides drums, but I wanted to do something different. I saw this video of the Bloody Beetroots and I thought “I want to do what they’re doing”. From there I taught myself how to DJ from YouTube, and I slowly started buying the gear, while working at Brumby's Bakery to build up money. Eventually started doing house parties for something like $100 for five hours, and after a while a club in Adelaide contacted me and asked if I wanted to do a trial. Since then things have just been on an incline.
Futuremag Music: How’d you move into production?
Godlands: So I wanted to do more! I knew just DJing could only get me so far, I decided to pursue something more, so I decided to give it a crack. I started to learn some skills at SAE, and basically from there I’ve been working on it all, it’s been about four years now. It’s been half self-taught, and half tutorage from SAE and YouTube.
Futuremag Music: Your recent track ‘Everybody Knows’ is a banger! What was the process of creating the track?
Godlands: I always love to start with the drums because it’s more natural for me, through doing drumming while growing up, and DJing has a lot to do with beats too. I got the beat down on an eight bar loop to get the structure down, and from there I just build onto it. I went through a bunch of samples that I like or I thought would flow well, eventually found a sound I liked. I never go into a session thinking “I’m going to make this and that’s how it’s going to sound” because I always end up getting distracted by things, or I find a noise I think is really cool, and I mess around with it. It’s all about experimenting. It came to fruition in the end, I suppose.
Futuremag Music: What can we expect from your performances at Touch Bass this year?
Godlands: I’m going to play a lot of hiphop beats, as well as a heap of heavy bass driven production. I really wanted to do something different with my visuals this year, so I have gotten a team together to film some stuff, I didn’t want it to be like a 3D logo of my name. Hopefully that’ll come together in time for Touch Bass.
Futuremag Music: Who are you looking forward to seeing at Touch Bass?
Godlands: I really want to see Excision live, his whole show is going to be spectacular! You see these videos of his sets at big festivals and such, with his amazing visuals, especially that T-Rex. Of Course Slumber Jack, they’re my boys, and I love them! I’m actually really excited to see everyone to be honest, it should be a pretty gnarly show.
Futuremag Music: If ‘Godlands’ was a cocktail what would be in it to best describe yourself and your music?
Godlands: A cocktail hahah gosh… Um can I just be so Aussie and be a beer? Stuff a cocktail I’m a SuperDry! I’m a SuperDry because they’re super dry but super hydrating at the same time, they’re also the best on a hot summer’s day.
