INTO THE MOSH 006: GLOOMIE & MAIA TOAKLEY AT THE UNION HOTEL

Words by Patrick Staveley.

Saturday, June 25th - Gloomie and Maia Toakley - The Union Hotel, Newtown

It’s not often you have an opportunity to attend a gig for free, which you’d be quite happy to part ways with your money for. However, this was unquestionably the case for anyone who got to witness Gloomie’s intimate show at The Union Hotel, Newtown on June 25.

The wonderful Maia Toakley opened the show with a magical set to establish a blissful atmosphere in the joint. Gloomie took to the stage at 10:30 in support of her debut EP Storm Chaser and the moment you heard the first chords of Every Time I Leave, you knew you were in for a dreamy set.

Real Good Friend, which Gloomie describes as her favourite song of hers, was arguably a highlight of the show - somehow sounding instrumentally identical to the recorded version, with her voice whispering the same soft tones that’s come to define her music. The set ended with a stirring rendition of her hit single Dilemma, which was a beautiful singalong from family, friends and devoted fans of this talented, up-and-coming artist.
