CREATIVE CONVERSATIONS 131: ZIMMER90 ON THEIR DISCOGRAPHY AND BAND PROGRESSION

Interview by Andre Habibi.

German duo of best friends and creative partners, Zimmer90 have released their fourth coming EP, What Love Is.

If you’ve been on TikTok or Instagram recently, chances are you’ve already heard the sounds of Zimmer90. The German band's synth-soaked single What Love Is became the de facto recap soundtrack of 2023.

Futuremag Music sat down with Zimmer90 to talk about their discography.

FMM: Zimmer90 is characterised by airy falsettos and ambient synths. What was the sonic development in the band? Which artists were you inspired by?

Zimmer90: We listened to a lot of jazz and classical music while growing up. That influenced  the way we do harmonies. Rhythm and arrangement choices are influenced by groups like Daft Punk, M83 or Tame Impala.

FMM: How did Zimmer90 come as a group?

Zimmer90: In 2020, Josch and Finn were taking lessons from the same piano teacher. He linked us up and encouraged us to work on our music. We then started to play small gigs for our friends and learned how to produce. Since then, we have worked together on  Zimmer90.

FMM: What is the creative process behind your discography?

Zimmer90: Generally, we just try to follow the music and look to unlock each song in an individual way. Josch is a great songwriter and brings many exciting ideas to the process, while Finn is good at producing and structuring ideas and songs. For each record, we like to build a little universe and story that we can immerse ourselves in while writing and producing the music.

FMM: What Love Is, is the band’s most famous track, in part from TikTok and other social media platforms. What role do you think social media plays on spotlighting emerging artists?

Zimmer90: On the one hand, social media is great because it gives independent artists like us the opportunity to reach more people with the music, without working with big  labels. On the other hand, it is changing the way we listen to and write music. Everything is becoming more compact, shorter and faster moving. I think you can see a loss of quality and over saturation in the music that is being released today.

FMM: Do you see your music maintaining its dream-pop sound? Where do you see your  band progressing in the future?

ZImmer90: We just want to keep creating together. Zimmer90 has enabled us to have so many beautiful experiences already and we are looking forward to having more of them. I don't know exactly how our sound will develop, but it will all have a certain Zimmer90 feel, because it’s all made by us.

FMM: Zimmer90 have sold out venues in your solo tour and are expected to play at numerous European festivals in the coming months. How has the European music scene been post-pandemic?

Zimmer90: The pandemic was really bad for a lot of artists. Luckily, we weren’t touring at the time. We used the time to learn how to produce and write songs. Now, as we are starting to tour in Europe, we are just beginning to explore the different countries and music scenes. What we have seen so far were lovely people, that brought so much loving energy to our shows. We are so grateful for that!
