Hutcher Interview - A Modern Sound
Meet Hutcher, a Sydney based producer blending the best of UK garage, house, and techno. Hutcher's diverse style has launched the young gun to new heights. We had a chat to Hutcher about his new single 'Love Me Like', his start in music, and the future of the project.
Futuremag Music: Hey Hutcher, how's life?
Hutcher: Life is pretty good to be honest. I’m enjoying making music and living life as a young adult. There’s definitely not much I can complain about.
Futuremag Music: Jumping into it, can you talk us through your relationship with music? How'd you launch the Hutcher project?
Hutcher: I’ve always had a passion for music and since an early age I found myself analysing how songs were made and why they sounded the way they did. It wasn’t till I moved overseas and spent two years in the UK that I really thought about starting to learn production and how to write music. During my schooling there I was introduced to UK Garage and House and the culture surrounding the genre, and that gave birth to the style of music I wanted to create. I grew up listening to Jazz and Soul and that’s the reason why 90’s UK Garage and House, which is heavily influenced by the two, found it’s way into my heart.
The Hutcher project came around about a year ago and since then I’ve been working on ways to modernise my sound and mould the project, as a whole, into what I want. There’s definitely a lot of work to do but I’m excited for what lies ahead.
Futuremag Music: Can you take us through your production process for your debut single, 'Love Me Like'? What's your favourite aspect of the single?
Hutcher: ‘Love Me Like’ is a track that came together very quickly and swiftly. I first got ahold of the vocals a few months ago and I built the entire track around them. Elements of soul and jazz really influenced my production with this record as I wanted to create a flavour that matched the vocals and delivered their intended meaning. I find jazz and soul is always the best way to add warmth and emotion to a track so that’s what I went with on this one.
My favourite aspect of the single is definitely how dynamic it is in terms of where it can be played. I think the track suits not only being played at clubs/festivals but even in the background at a chill cafe.
Futuremag Music: What does the future hold for Hutcher?
Hutcher: Hopefully some really fun and incredible experiences. My main goal for the year ahead is to write and release some really cool records and to experiment with the sound I’m making. I’d love to collaborate with a few artists, especially some singers, and expand my project out into the performance field and start playing some DJ sets.
Futuremag Music: A funny one to wrap it up. If 'Hutcher' was a cocktail what would be in it to best describe yourself and your music?
Hutcher: A ‘Hutcher’ cocktail would most definitely include a decent amount of vodka, some freshly brewed espresso and a dash of ice to give it a cool touch. In simpler terms, ‘Hutcher’ would be an Espresso Martini - a perfect way to finish your meal and start the night.
