CREATIVE CONVERSATIONS 121: Teenage Dads ready for adulthood in 2023

Written by Patrick Staveley.

Sharing a festival line-up with Teenage Joans and Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers may sound confusing, but the music of Teenage Dads lets you know you’re listening to something truly unique.

Looking to back up a busy 2022 which heralded three headline tours and two support tours, Teenage Dads are releasing a brand new EP on the 3rd of March.

“(2022) was pretty busy,” Connor says. “The first (tour) was like the hangover from Covid reschedules and stuff in January. That tour was meant to happen in 2021, but got pushed, so yeah. It was just our tour - support tour - our tour - support tour - our tour and that was it I think. It was hectic but good.”

The Victorian quartet supported Spacey Jane and Lime Cordiale last year with plans to join the latter on tour again - to the UK and Europe later this year.

“It was really nice. We always try to put on a good show and a lot of people seemed to enjoy themselves which is good. We had lots of people come to our shows saying they saw us at Spacey. It’s just a best-case scenario when you do these support shows - have a fan see you the first time and want to come see you again.”

Most recently, ‘The Dads’ transported us all back to the early 1980s with a dazzling and creative take on The Buggles’ ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’ for Triple J’s Like A Version.

‘Midnight Driving’ the new EP will drop next month, featuring 2022 singles ‘Exit Sign’, ‘Hey Diego’ and their biggest hit yet - ‘Teddy’ which polled at 63 on the Triple J Hottest 100.

The band says that the EP is a complete mix of different tastes.

“All of the songs are a bit different to one another so if the audience reacts a certain way to one song, they might act differently to another.”

Teenage Dads have previously listed the band Phoenix as one of their influences. You can definitely hear some similarities on this EP, though the band says that roping in some inspirations can be difficult.

“It’s the worst thing in the world when you write a song and go ‘oh i just ripped off ABBA,’” Jordy jokes.

“Putting yourself up against someone (creatively) can be a mental struggle.”

“You just try really hard to keep it as original as possible. Everyone has different influences,” he adds.

Teenage Dads’ latest single Midnight Driving has also just received its first play on Triple J, marking the fourth single from the new EP to be released.

The title track on the EP is soothing and the song itself is perfectly reflective of the name. Imagine yourself driving late at night alone in the car, with your thoughts, the night sky and a calming track playing in the background. Midnight Driving has become that track.

2023 could well be a real breakthrough year for Teenage Dads not just in Australia but abroad as well. An overseas tour with Lime Cordiale shapes to be an exciting adventure for the four lads who simplify what’s ahead this year as “lots of shows, lots of music, lots of shows.”
