LÂLKA Interview - Sparkling, Left-Field Pop

After the release of her electropop anthem ‘CTRL ALTer ego’, we had a chat to LÂLKA about music, touring and visual media.

Futuremag Music: Hey LÂLKA! Congratulations on the release of ‘CTRL ALTer ego’. How did this song take shape?

LÂLKA: The phrase “CTRL ALTer ego” had been kicking around my mind for a while, so I decided to write a song about it. I played it live at a few shows and got a really good response from it, so I decided to work on it more by adding more production. I roped in my mates Haxx and Paces to add their production flavours, and the song ended up being a piece of sparking left-field pop.

Futuremag Music: Do you find that your experimental pop production helps you address relevant themes, such as artificial social media activity in ‘CTRL ALTer ego’?

LÂLKA: I guess the “PC music” vibes suited the lyrical content of the song, but I didn’t really think about it, to be honest. I just wanted to make a bop!

Futuremag Music: What do you have in store for fans coming to your upcoming East Coast tour?

LÂLKA: Kicking things off with Charli XCX’s 1999 Brisbane Party with a super energetic, fast and furious set. Then I head to Sydney for the Electronic Music Conference to play an all-killer-filler set as it’s an industry showcase. Finally to Melbourne for the 2nd ever LÂLKA + Friends, which is a curated clubnight and I’ve invited an all-female lineup of Aeora, KAIAR and Yollks to play. They make pretty exciting electronic music and I highly recommend checking their music out.

Futuremag Music: Who are some of the artists that have influenced your sound the most?

LÂLKA: Grimes has always been a huge influence. I love SOPHIE’s hard-hitting industrial production style, and I love Charli XCX’s gift for pop melodies.

Futuremag Music: Your music video for ‘Shut Up’ is incredibly intense and fun at the same time. Do you like incorporating visual elements into your creative space?

LÂLKA: I’m such a visual person, so yes love putting thought into the visual elements of my project. The music video for “CTRL ALTer ego” was inspired by hypebeast culture and youthful fashion shows that I obsessively follow on Instagram!

Futuremag Music: Lastly, if you had to describe your music and production style in a cocktail, what would be in it?

LÂLKA: Hmm, I’m not much of a cocktail drinker but maybe the Singapore Sling? Exotic, complex yet sweet.
